Preparing Hearts for His Glory: Science

I admit, like many other homeschool moms, that science is one of the last subjects we get to during the week, if at all.  And actually performing a science experiment does not often happen.  In the past we have read books on different topics, gone to the zoo for their classes, and memorized science facts with our CC group, but we never really studied it as a daily subject..UNTIL NOW!!  :o)

Heart of Dakota's Preparing Hearts for His Glory incorporates daily science readings using real books.  The areas of life science, physical science, and earth science are each addressed.  What is cool is that the science exploration topics loosely correspond with the history topics.  Israelites wandering the desert = desert habitat.  Seafaring explorers = coral reef.

Weekly assignments are as follows:
Day 1: Notebook entry
Day 2: Oral narration by retelling the story
Day 3: Answer five questions in a notebook
Day 4: Conduct a science experiment and log it in a notebook

For the first month we read One Small Square: Arctic Tundra and we just finished reading One Small Square: Cactus Desert.  DD has really enjoyed both of those books and has learned a lot about the animals that live in these extreme climates.  We are now reading The Great Dinosaur Mystery and the Bible

Here are some samples of the work she has completed.

June Module - Travel the World

Travel the WorldToday Our Homeschool Reviews has the pleasure of reviewing the June Module of the Schoolhouse Planner, Travel the World.  If you are looking for something that gives a great overview of the earth, markings on a globe, maps, oceans, and continents, essentially traveling the world, this is it!

The Old Schoolhouse (TOS) Magazine makes it easy for parents by packaging together everything you need.

All modules of The Schoolhouse Planner, including this one, are prepared in a PDF file.  Now normally I don't like to do a lot of printing but Travel the World was perfect because I could print as little or as much as I wanted.

The first half of the module was full of information, starting with the globe and how to find places by learning about all of the imaginary lines.  If I gave you the coordinates of a city on the globe, could you find it?  Well, we can!  :o)  They also give a link to a fun site to practice using latitudes and longitudes.  My daughter loved playing the game!

The next section covers maps, the continents, and the oceans.  For us that was just review since we have covered this material already.  For those who haven't, it's a great start.

Now we get into the meat of the material, learning about the seven continents.  It was fun learning some things about each of the continents and being rewarded by clicking on links to play games about each one.  Again, my daughter's favorite part!!

Up to this point, there is no printing required.  I actually think it is easier to read the material on the computer with your child and then just click on the links for further information and games, then to print it all out.

The rest of the module includes fun activities like a word search, crossword puzzle, and coloring sheets.  There are also some copywork pages, both in manuscript and cursive, and a few pages to get you started on a lapbook.

If there are older children in the household, there is also a highschool expansion section.

My Thoughts: I honestly enjoyed working through this module with my daughter.  We both learned some new things and she loved being able to click on the links to play games and learn more.  If you are looking for a nice overview of world geography, this is something to look into.

Thoughts from a 7-Year Old: I like Travel the World a lot. The earth's axis is a nice little thing to know, and longitude and latitude rock. The website they found for lesson 1 is lovely; I am so good at that latitude and longitude game. It is new and exiting for me. I love it. Your kids should do it, too! (They'd love it as much as I do!)

Find Out More: TOS Magazine's Schoolhouse Store offers Travel the World as a download for only $7.95.  You can read more about it here and even see a sample.  And if you are looking for something for the whole year, you can purchase the 12-module pack here.

My Crewmates are also reviewing Travel the World, so you can check out what they think here.

Preparing Hearts for His Glory: Bible

Today I wanted to do a feature on our Bible Study. In Heart of Dakota's Preparing Hearts for His Glory, the Bible memory work in each unit is from the book of Psalms. We are memorizing passages from Psalms through repetition, copywork, actions, and music. We also listen to selections from Lead Me to the Rock by Kelly Crawford, which correspond to the Bible memory verses.

So far we have memorized Psalm 1:1-6, Psalm 127:3-5, and Psalm 34:1-9 (mostly in part to the wonderful CD!!) I wanted to share our lesson from a few weeks ago.

Psalm 127:3-5 - Sons are a heritage from the Lord, children a reward from him. Like arrows in the hands of a warrior are sons born in one's youth. Blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them. They will not be put to shame when they contend with their enemies in the gate.

Children are a blessing from the Lord. Parents are responsible to train children and teach them the Lord's ways, so that they will be like arrows flying straight and true. Once an arrow is out of the hand, can you direct it? Why is it important that children be directed to the right mark when they are young? After a child has gone into the world, will it be hard to direct him/her then? Why is it important that children be trained according to God's word? It is important so that when they go out into the world, God can direct them.

I think we both learned something important during this lesson!!

Preparing Hearts for His Glory: History

I thought I would do a little feature on each subject we are working on, so today I'll start with history.

Our curriculum, Preparing Heart for His Glory, covers Creation to late 1900's and we are currently on week five.  So far we have read about Creation, Cain and Abel, Noah's Ark and the flood, life after the flood, the Tower of Babel, the Ice Age, the Egyptians, and the Babylonians.

There is a story to read aloud each day, along with a project that starts at the beginning of the week and continues for three days.  There is one day for researching a topic using a dictionary or online resources, one day for vocabulary, one day for geography, and one day for timeline.

The projects have included designing a shield of faith, studying warm and cool colors to paint a rainbow, creating a cave painting, making a clay map of the Mesopotamia area, and making a clay cartouche.

Disclosure: This product was NOT given to me for review purposes.  I bought this product on my own and LOVE it so I want to share it with you!  I have received no compensation from it and all opinions and experiences within this review are my own.

What are we up to?

I thought I would post a little about our school schedule.

We finished 1st grade about two months ago and immediately started 2nd grade. The first reason we did this is because we take so many mini vacations and breaks during the year, we don't have to take the whole summer off. The second reason is because our co-op in the fall will be covering the Medieval/Early Renaissance time period, and since our book goes from Creation to late 1900's, I wanted to be in line with our group. If we stay on track, we should be hitting the Fall of Rome in September.

We are in the 8th week in the Heart of Dakota’s Preparing Hearts for His Glory book, and so far we really like it. This program provides a one-year overview of world history from creation to the late 1900's told in story form. Included in this are corresponding history read-alouds, oral narration, written narration, oral comprehension, Biblical applications, geography, timeline, vocabulary, history projects, copywork, and corresponding independent literature readings and assignments.

It seems like a lot, but even though some subjects are covered everyday, several subjects are covered only once a week. Each day is new and we are always wondering what we will read or cover next!

All the books used in the curriculum are listed here. Although our daughter has liked all the books we have read so far (about 5 from start to finish), her favorite book has been One Small Square: Arctic Tundra, and her favorite subject is History.

I would like to highlight one subject each week to show you what we are working on, so stay tuned!
