The Worldwide Dessert Contest Review and Giveaway

Have you heard of the book The Worldwide Dessert Contest?  If you have, I can't wait to tell you about the new Enhanced Multimedia Edition.  If you haven't, well...you're in for a treat!!

A little bit of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory with a dash of Homer Price's donut maker, this novel pays homage to the longstanding rapport between children and sweets. John Applefeller longs to win the Worldwide Dessert Contest, but all his delicious desserts have a penchant for changing into something else at the last minute. The way he overcomes this difficulty and takes first place involves a search for the greatest chef in the world, the defeat of the thieving title-holder of the contest and a run-in with a judge who has, thanks to John, a caramel apple bonded to his cheek from their last encounter.

Dan Elish published the children's story in 1988 and then in 1993 it was performed on stage as a musical.  Fast forward to 2011, The Worldwide Dessert Contest is now available as an interactive ebook, with links throughout to the songs!

This book has had Funny Bunny and I in stitches with laughter!!  I love Dan's writing style and how he makes the characters just come alive on the page.

There is John Applefeller, the main character, who loves apple desserts and has wanted to win the Silver Spoon in the Worldwide Dessert Contest more than anyone.  But he has finished in last place all ten years he has entered because his desserts change into something else at the last minute.

Other contestants include Reginald Coco, Princess Irma A. Frostina, and Michel Deserts, all with varied specialities.  Sylvester S. Sweet, has been the winner of ten consecutive Silver Spoons, with his double-chocolate-fudge-raspberry-coconut-lime swirl.  Sounds shifty to me!

Then there are the judges.  Brewster McLaughlin, Hamilton Crusthardy, George Saucery, and Nathaniel Barkle, the head judge, with a large brown caramel apple, it's white stick pointing toward the sky, permanently stuck to his cheek, caused by one of Applefeller's changing desserts.

My Thoughts:  This is a great read aloud for children of all ages!  Funny Bunny and I enjoyed learning about all the characters and their silly attributes.  I think this book would make for a great audio as well.  We couldn't wait to listen to each of the songs...they make this book even more fun and unique.

Thought of an 8-Year Old:  Silly and hilarious, Applefeller's desperate wanting of the Silver Spoon makes him even more determined to make this year the year he wins it. Judge Barkle is first up. "Delicious!" he declares. But after the fifth bite, the apple pancake is becoming rubbery in Barkle's mouth. What could Applefeller's dessert be turning into this time?

I like The Worldwide Dessert Contest because it has silly songs, hilarious characters and funny little lines. This is a "read another chapter, Mommy!" kind of book. We couldn't wait to see what came next! I really like it.

Find Out More:  You can find out more online on Amazon at The Worldwide Dessert Contest.  The purchase price is $9.99 and it can be experienced via anything with an Internet connection, including an iPad, phone, tablet, laptop or desktop computer.  You are also able to view a sample of the book and listen to a few songs.  You can also read more about it here.
