2009-2010 1st Grade Curriculum

Classical Conversations:
This was our second year in Classical Conversations. We covered World History: Ancients through Middle Ages, Timeline: Creation to Modern America, Exodus 20: Ten Commandments, World Maps, Biology and Earth Science, Science Experiments, Math Games, English Grammar, Fine Arts, Latin, Bible, and P.E.

In addition to the CC Program we used the following resources at home:

Math:
Rightstart Math Level B
First Grade Math Skill Builders Workbook
We finished Rightstart Level A and at the start of the year. I still like the program and she goes back and forth. She doesn't really like Math so it is sometimes a struggle but I see the benefits of this program.

History/Social Studies:
Story of the World Volume 1: Ancient Times
Maps, Charts, & Graphs C
Each chapter has one or two short stories about a time period in history. The activity book has comprehension questions, sample narrations, maps, coloring pages, and some wonderful activities for each chapter.

Writing:
Writing with Ease 1
Writing with Ease uses passages and sentences from classic children's literature and focuses on copywork and narration. Passages are used from books like Little House in the Big Woods, The Adventures of Pinocchio, Mary Poppins, Peter Rabbit, Charlotte's Web, Winnie the Pooh, and The Velveteen Rabbit.

Spelling:
About Spelling Level 1
Level One brings together the three pathways to learning - auditory, visual, and kinesthetic. The kit includes a phonogram CD, full set of phonogram cards and letter tiles, along with easy to follow lessons.

Grammar:
First Language Lessons 1
This book is for first and second grade and teaches grammar concepts in a gentle way, in only a few minutes a day. Some things it covers are the eight parts of speech, the basic rules of capitalization and punctuation, the four types of sentences, and beginning storytelling and narration skills.
