Blogging News

I apologize for the lack of blog posts lately.  Between decorating for Christmas, cleaning the house, and working with Funny Bunny to make crafts for our local Homeschooling Gift & Craft Fair last week, I was short on time.  Thankfully all of that is behind us now so we are back on schedule. :)

I do have some sad blogging news to share though.  After being with The TOS Review Crew since the summer of 2010 {4 1/2 years!!}, I have decided to take a break, at least for now.  My plan will be for Funny Bunny to start Challenge A with Classical Conversations in the fall, so I didn't want to add any more work for her during that time.

I have some very exciting news as well!  I will continue blogging and we will still be reviewing homeschooling and other products, but just at a more relaxed pace.

As a matter of fact, I have one review coming this week that I'm excited to share about, so stay tuned!!

It's HOT Out There!

Photobucket
The SchoolHouse Review Crew is talking about ways of beating the summer heat...and this is perfect timing because it is HOT out there!

Here are some ideas for your and your family:

1.  Start School.  I know for some it is hard to grasp, but we start school in the summer so we can take off in the fall and spring when it is cooler.  I would rather be outside when it's 80 instead of when it's 100+.

2.  Go to the Movies.  Our local movie theater runs movies for kids every  Thursday and the cost is only $2 for the movies, a drink, and a popcorn. What a deal...and in the air conditioning!!

3.  Try the Library.  Many libraries have summer reading and event programs.  These are great for kids of all ages and FREE!

4.  Water Day.  If you are like us, you don't have a pool, but why not set up a backyard water obstacle course.  Put out a couple sprinklers and just let the kids have fun for a couple hours.

5.  Crafts.  Pull out all those crafts that have been stuck in the back of the cabinet or drawer since last Christmas...you know you have them.  ;)

6.  Play Doh.  I don't know about you, but my child can play with this for hours.

7.  Cooking.  Have a baking day and make some homemade bread or muffins.  We are planning to make Chocolate Chip Banana Bread and Biscuits this week.

8.  Car Wash.  It may seem like a chore, but just let the kids have fun with it...maybe even set up the sprinklers around it.  Hmmm, I think I'll put this on our schedule this week!

What are you doing to beat the summer heat?

2011-2012 TOS Homeschool Crew

It was May of last year that I received an email telling me I was accepted on to the TOS Homeschool Crew.  I was pretty excited and surprised because I really didn't think that after applying I would make it...after all, I only have one child.  {I've found out since that there really are other homeschool families out there with only one child} ;)

It was a great year and I got to know all kinds of wonderful people!  I seriously cringed at the thought of *talking* to strangers online at first.  But I am glad I did because I have met some lovely ladies {you know who you are}!!

So now, it is the start of another year, and this week was the official launch of the 2011-2012 TOS Homeschool Crew!  I get to meet some more great women and tell you about some more great homeschool products!

I can't wait to get started so stay tuned for an exciting ride!

TOS Secondary Student Planner Review

Our Homeschool Reviews was asked by The Old Schoolhouse (TOS) to review one of their many student planners and I am excited to share with you what I received.  TOS has the following planners available for sale:

Primary Planner—grades K–3
Secondary School Planner—grades 4–6
Middle School Planner—grades 7–8
High School Planner—grades 9–12

Since I was allowed to choose, I chose the Secondary School Planner for grades 4-6.

This planner is as much for the student as it is for the parent.  Included is a 2010-2011 monthly school calendar with customizable sheets.  The calendar is wonderful, but what I have liked the best are the Informational Must-Know Lists and Forms.  I was surprised to see that there were several with information that we are studying right now.  Some of my favorite lists are:

The Miracles of Jesus (with Bible references)
Basic Roman Numerals (we just studied this in Math)
History Timeline (nice to have it all in one place)

Some forms I printed out immediately include:

Books Read This Year
Field Trip Log (love this one!)
Bible Memorization Record
Memory Work Record

There are many more and I can't even begin to list them all.

My Thoughts: For the price, you can't beat what you are getting.  I don't have to spend the time creating all of these forms now, they are all there and I can use them year after year.  Normally I don't like using ink to print out forms, but I can choose how much I want to print and when.

Find Out More: The Old Schoolhouse Store sells the Secondary School Planner as an e-book for only $9.95.  You can view a sample of it HERE.

Disclosure: This product was given to Our Homeschool Reviews for free for review purposes, and I do not have to return the product to the vendor. I have received no compensation from it and all opinions and experiences within this review are my own.
