Volunteering

"What are some volunteer opportunities that your family has participated in?"  Our family at Our Homeschool Reviews has participated in some really rewarding projects, some an annual tradition, and some only just once.

Our homeschool group hosts an annual Operation Christmas Child Shoebox Wrapping.  We have been participating in this for several years and enjoy it each time.  We meet together to wrap shoeboxes with goodies and essentials for children for Samaritan's Purse, watch a short video about Operation Christmas Child, and make cards to put in the shoeboxes.

The mission of Operation Christmas Child is to demonstrate God's love in a tangible way to needy children around the world, and together with the local church worldwide, to share the Good News of Jesus Christ.

National Collection Week is November 15-22 and if you want to get involved you can get more information HERE.

Last year we went to a local organization which provides food, clothes, and other items to people in need and asked if there was a family our group could provide for.  We received a family and we were able to get enough people to pitch in to really provide a wonderful Christmas for them!

We also periodically bring food to our local food pantry.  They have let our daughter weigh the bags we bring and stock their shelves with our items.

Last year I heard that you can sign up to ring the bell for the Salvation Army.  I found out about this too late though and all spots were already taken, so I think we will sign up this year.

We are currently looking for other volunteer opportunities that our 7 year old can participate in with us.  I know as she gets older there will be more to choose from, but right now her age prevents her from getting involved with some things.

I am looking forward to reading other responses to this question and hope we can get some good ideas!

Volunteering for Operation Christmas Child is a great way to volunteer! My girls loved doing that last year! :)

Thanks for the reminder to fill up those shoeboxes! I'm always looking for ideas that I can do with my little one.
