Dig-It! Games: Roman Town Review

Has your child even been interested in becoming an archaeologist?  Do your children love to learn about history, especially the Roman culture?  If so, Roman Town, by Dig-It! Games, may be the game for them!

So what is Roman Town?  Roman Town is a archaeological simulation game where your budding archaeologist digs for buried artifacts, puts together broken pieces, solves puzzles, and learns about the history of this Roman town and what life was like for these people.  Not only are children learning about the Roman culture, but they also have to use analytical thinking and problem solving skills to accomplish tasks.

The first thing the player does, after some instruction from the professor, is to go to the Roman Town site and start digging.  They are given multiple tools to choose from, each having a specific purpose.

Here is an example of some of the artifacts you will uncover in the game.   After each artifact is revealed, you learn what they are and how each was used.  Is it a cooking utensil or could it be a pot?  You then head to the Roman Town lab where you decide what to do next.

Here is an example of one of the games you can play.  Remember that pot you may have found?  Now you get to piece it together like a puzzle.  This puzzle is in 3D so it's trickier than you may think to get it back together.

Another game is to match the artifacts that you have found with their modern counterparts.  I think this is a great way for the kids to really think about how these items were used back then and what we use today in their place.
There are 6 levels in Roman Town and each level has tasks that you have to complete before moving on to the next.  Once all levels are completed you can go back and play the games over and over again.  Below is a wonderful video that explains the game.

My Thoughts:  I think this is a great game and would recommend it for any family who is studying Roman culture.  When we received this game, we had just finished studying about Rome, so it was perfect timing!  Our daughter did not have any trouble playing and was able to play by herself with only a little help from me at times.  I do want to point out that if the child playing does not yet know how to read, an adult or older child will have to read it for them.

Thoughts of a 7-Year Old:  I like it and it is fun for me and all I have to say about it is positive positive positive. My favorite part is when you get to the lab and play Calculi, which is like Connect 4.  I play against Marcus, the Roman boy, and I usually win.  I like the rest of the game too.

Find Out MoreRoman Town is available on CD for $39.99 BUT between now and February 21, 2011, you can get Roman Town for only $19.96 with the code TOS2011.  This home version will allow up to 5 players.  Dig-It! Games also offers a Teachers Edition for up to 15 students.  Roman Town targets 5th to 8th graders, but in my opinion, is great for all ages.
