Weekly Wrap-Up: Third Grade #7

This week we finished up Unit 5 ~ Early Settlement in the New World and started Unit 6 ~ William Penn: Founder of Pennsylvania in our Heart of Dakota book, Bigger Hearts for His Glory.

History

Way back in our first week of history our daughter drew a map of the top half of Earth so she could show the routes of different explorers.  She has added new routes since and will add more in the future.  {just in case you can't tell, this map is not to scale.}

This week we have enjoyed learning about William Penn and his life leading up to the founding of Pennsylvania.  Unlike other explorers, he had a great relationship with the Indians, which caused Pennsylvania to prosper.

Today we also learned about an artist who was born in Pennsylvania named Benjamin West.  He used berry juice as paint and the hairs of his cat's tail to make paint brushes (poor kitty).  We squeezed some blueberries, strawberries, a lemon, an orange, and used some juice to make our own paintings.

American Girl Book Club

We had our second American Girl Book Club today.  The girls read book 2 and 3 of Kaya before meeting.  19 girls were in attendance (wow)!  They talked about the book, made a parfleche out of brown paper (see below), and then had some snacks that Kaya may have eaten herself.  Reading these books is so timely right now because we are studying the same thing.  I love how everything is falling in place!

Science

We started reading a new book in science called Science in Colonial America.  We've learned about:

How soap helps stop the spread of germs

Why sailors use the North Star to guide them as they sail

(this one is just for fun)

Strange folk remedies

How the body fights off an infection

Bible

This week we learned Proverbs 3: 3-4 and about the character trait "Faithfulness."  Last week was "Responsible" and the week before was "Trustworthy."  We are really focusing on these when it comes to me asking for something to be done.  We've had some problems with behavior and having these lessons to fall back on has helped.  The past couple days have been better.

I'm running out of time so that is it for now.  How was your week?  Thanks for joining Our Homeschool Reviews and for more Weekly Wrap-Up, this week I am linked up with Kris over at Weird, Unsocialized Homeschoolers.

Wonderful week!! I'm totally jealous. Ours was not what we expected. LOL

Popping in from the wrap-up!

Looks like a great week. I grew up in PA and love Benjamin West. I didn't know he used his kitty's hair for a brush! I think learning things like that makes homeschooling just as fun for mom as for the kids.

Great pictures - I always enjoy seeing the children's work. Looks like another fabulous week :)
