'No Poo' Shampoo

I'm finally doing it!  I've been shampoo and conditioner free for four days now.  I know...four days...big deal, but my plan is to never use them again.  Huh?  What?  Yep, that's what I said.  I know you are wondering why in the world I am doing this.

A couple reasons...

* Shampoo and conditioners are expensive
* They both contain harsh chemicals that can hurt your scalp and hair
* They both strip your hair of its natural oils
* Shampooing daily is really not good for your hair

Well, for over a year I have been reading about 'No Poo' Shampoo. It's basically a method of washing your hair without the harmful chemicals of shampoos and conditioners.

Here is all you need:

* Two containers
* Baking Soda
* Apple Cider Vinegar or White Vinegar
* Water

From what I have read, just mix 1 Tb of baking soda in 1 cup of water and then 1 Tb of ACV in a different cup of water.  Make sure you use different cups...the results would not be good if you mixed them together.  ;)

Pour the baking soda mixture over your head and massage your scalp lightly.  Leave it in for a couple minutes and then wash out.  Do the same for the ACV mixture.  You will smell the vinegar at first, but by the end of your shower it will be gone and your hair will not smell.

So far my hair is pretty much the same and I cannot tell a difference yet.  I have read that between 1 and 2 weeks there is an adjustment period (think 'greasy') but if you get through that, it gets better.  I'll have to post an update when I have completed week one.

If you want more information, just search 'No Poo Shampoo'.  Make sure to read the comments too, which have tons of great advice and tips.

I have been wanting to try this because I have issues with itchy scalp. But also, I am chicken to try it because I need conditioner. Is there a home made conditioner recipe out there?

Good for you! You should check out this blog for other great ideas on cutting back on harsh chemicals. My friend sarah writes it: http://44socksontheline.wordpress.com/2011/07/07/multipurpose/

Mary, the vinegar mixture is supposed to act like a conditioner. I'm sure there are other recipes out there though but I don't know what they are. If you try it, let me know. I was worried that my scalp may get too dry and so far everything seems ok.

Thanks for the link to Sarah's site.

I've never heard of this! I'm going to try it!

great idea...I watched a show about chemicals in the things we are using and you're right about shampoo etc. thanks for this.

If you try it, let me know how it goes. I'll post more about it next week with some helpful links. So far it is going fine, but I do miss how the conditioner makes my hair feel.

Very interesting waiting to see what you write in 2 weeks:) I have very greasy/oily hair so not sure I could make it with shampoo. I will look into it tho:)

Hopefully I won't give up. My hair seems a bit drier right now so I actually may decrease the baking soda and increase the vinegar. I'll give it a few more days before I do it though.

I'll be interested to hear how it goes for you. I can not skip ONE day of shampooing or my hair looks awful (oily and pressed against my scalp!) But shampoo dries out the ends, even when I use conditioner.

Keep us updated on your "no poo" experiment!

I have been interested in trying this since I read about it a few years back on a homeschool forum. Please do share again in a few weeks- I am seriously tempted to try it. Generic shampoos don't make my hair feel that great and the brand names are just too expensive!

Mary

OK- I will try it and get back to you. I am scared. LOL
