God's Not Dead Movie Review

How far would you go…to defend your belief in God?

God's Not Dead, a Pure Flix Entertainment film, is set to show in theaters starting March 21st.  I had the opportunity to preview the film in my home this week.

Synopsis

College freshman and Christian, Josh Wheaton, finds his faith challenged on his first day of Philosophy class by Professor Radisson, a self-professed atheist.  Because Josh will not admit that “God Is Dead," he must prove God's existence over the next several weeks, by debating Radisson in front of the class.

There are also several subplots that run through the movie: Josh's controlling girlfriend, a self-absorbed business man, a Muslim family and their daughter who has a secret, a career-driven, liberal PETA woman who receives life altering news, Professor Radisson's Christian girlfriend, an American Pastor and his African Missionary friend, and a Chinese student and his father.

And there are special appearances by Duck Dynasty’s Willie and Korie Robertson and the four-time Grammy-nominated band Newsboys.

God’s Not Dead weaves together multiple stories of faith, doubt and disbelief, culminating in a dramatic call to action.

My Thoughts

From the moment I watched the trailer for God's Not Dead I was intrigued, and it did not disappoint.  I think what I took away from the film is that it will hopefully inspire people to explore what they really believe about God, sparking conversations and life changing decisions.

Do I think that Josh could have had a better argument by quoting more scripture instead of scientists?  Maybe.  Do I think some of the subplots were a little weak and the characters stereotypical?  Possibly.  But it's a 1hr and 53min movie.

I personally see it as an opportunity to watch it and discuss it with my daughter.  Could we have made a better apologetic argument?  How well could we defend our belief in God?

1 Peter 3:15 - But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have.

It's also a good reminder that, although dramatised in the film, this is happening all around us.  At the end of the movie there is a scrolling list of legal cases where University Students and Campus Ministries were condemned for their faith.

Find Out More:  You can find out more online on the God's Not Dead Facebook Page. It is coming to theaters nationwide on March 21, 2014.  You can also find more at God's Not Dead the Movie.  They have even put together some FREE Resources!

God's Not Dead is rated PG and contains no profanity, drugs, sexual content, or nudity.  A girl does kiss a boy on the cheek and a girlfriend and boyfriend hug and kiss, but that is about it.  There is a violent scene when a man hits a girl across the face twice and when someone is in a fatal accident.  There is talk of evolution and sensitive themes like cancer, dementia, and dying.  I always recommend watching a movie first before showing it to your children.

How to Avoid Homeschool Burn Out

You see the end in sight, but you've been working in the same books for months, the kids are getting restless, you're already thinking about going to the next homeschool convention...your family is getting burnt out!!

So how do you avoid homeschool burn out in the first place?  I think the best advice is to switch things up!  Simple changes in your school day will help to energize your family, giving them the push they need to finish the school year off with a bang.  Here are a few tips.

1. Location, Location, Location.  Where are you currently doing your schoolwork?  Is it still working for your family?  If not, change it!   Go to the library once a week and get school done there.  Switch from the schoolroom to the kitchen, or the kitchen to the dining room.  Kids love these small changes and it may make a bigger difference than you think.

2. Change Your Material.  Is there a certain subject that your child is frustrated with?  Change it up a bit.  Instead of reading from your science text book, find a chapter book on the same subject and have them read that (or read it to them).  Find a fun math program online that you can substitute for their regular math work.  There are tons of FREE program out there, you just need to look for them.

3. Go Outside.  When was the last time you took your children outside for a nature study or even for just a walk or bike ride?   I know this time of year it is too cold in some places, but even a break to play in the snow is what they may need to get their day going.

4. Get Out Those Crafts.  Has it been a while since your 4th grader got out the crafts?  Crafts are fun for all ages and can be made to go along with what they are studying.  Collages are easy and kids love to cut pictures out of magazines.  Give them some Legos and have them make the animals who live in that habitat you are studying.

5. Experiment Day.  Why not set a day aside every once in a while for experiments?  Science experiments, recipe experiments, Play-Doh experiments.  Expect a mess and don't worry about it. Hands on learning is the best kind of learning.

6. Time Off.  Maybe what your family needs is some time off.  Go on a day trip to a museum, to the park, or to the movies.   Taking time off school and spending the day doing something fun as a family may be just the thing you need to re-energize!

I hope some of my tips have helped.  I know when we have begun to burn out, I have tried each of these at different times, and they always seem to help!

ScienceandMath.com - Mastering 5th Grade Math - Volume 1 - Essentials of Fractions Review

ScienceandMath.com Review

Funny Bunny is currently in 5th grade, so when I was given the opportunity to review a 5th grade math product on fractions, I jumped at the chance!  I am always looking for ways for her to learn and review math concepts.

We received the DVD Mastering 5th Grade Math - Volume 1 - Essentials of Fractions by ScienceandMath.com.

The mission of ScienceAndMath.com is simple - to kindle your love of Science, Math, and the world around you!

ScienceandMath.com Review

Mastering 5th Grade Math - Essentials of Fractions is a 4 volume series, each including step by step video lessons, worksheets, and an answer key.

Jason Gibson, the creator of these award winning videos, is the instructor throughout the series.  Jason has earned advanced degrees in Engineering and Physics and has worked as a Rocket Scientist for NASA.

ScienceandMath.com Review

The Mastering 5th Grade Math - Volume 1 - Essentials of Fractions Table of Contents is as follows.  There are 16 lessons that range from reviewing the concepts of fractions to writing whole numbers as fractions. You can click below on the links to see a few sample videos.

Lesson 1: Review of Fraction Concepts {Sample}
Lesson 2: Writing Fractions as Words
Lesson 3: Finding Factors of Numbers
Lesson 4: Finding the Greatest Common Factor
Lesson 5: Finding the GCF of 3 Numbers
Lesson 6: Prime Factorization {Sample}
Lesson 7: Equivalent Fractions {Sample}
Lesson 8: Renaming Fractions
Lesson 9: Simplifying Fractions, Part 1
Lesson 10:
 Simplifying Fractions, Part 2
Lesson 11: Review of Improper Fractions
Lesson 12: Review of Mixed Fractions
Lesson 13: Writing Mixed Fractions as Improper Fractions
Lesson 14: Writing Improper Fractions as Mixed Fractions
Lesson 15: Thinking of Fractions as Division
Lesson 16: Writing Whole Numbers as Fractions

There are two discs included in the set.  The first includes all 16 lessons and can be used in the DVD player.  This is how we watched each lesson.

The second disc includes the worksheets for each lesson and the answer key.  It also includes all of the video lessons in MP4 Format for those who would rather watch them on the computer.  Mine opened easily in Windows Media Player.

How we used it:

Funny Bunny and I watched a lesson about every other day together.  The lessons are short, many less than 10 minutes.  We watched a lesson, I answered any questions she had, and then she would complete the worksheets that corresponded to the lesson.

Jason was very easy to listen to and he took his time to explain each of the concepts.  I liked the fact that after the explanation, he gave not just one or two, but several different examples. And each lesson builds on the previous.

Volume 1 in the series was mostly review for Funny Bunny, and actually some of the lessons went right along with what she is learning in her current math curriculum.  It was a great way to reinforce the concepts.

My Thoughts:

To be honest, I just never know how instructor led DVDs are going to go in our home.  They have been hit or miss with Funny Bunny.  Sometimes the instructor is too distracting and sometimes the lessons are not taught in a way that she can relate to.  Thankfully, this was not the case with Mastering 5th Grade Math.

Now as I said before, Volume 1 was mostly review for her, but she had no trouble sitting through each of the short lessons and completing the worksheets.  I am actually thinking of getting Volumes 2-4 and having her complete them over the summer so she has a good grasp on all aspects of fractions before starting 6th grade.  Many of the concepts in Volumes 3 and 4 specifically, would be new to her.

I think this would be a great product for the child who is either new to or struggling with fractions.

Thoughts of a 10-Year Old:

Mastering 5th Grade Math Volume 1 helps to explain what fractions are, how to write them, how to simplify them, how to tell whether fractions are equivalent, and more.  Since I already knew these concepts, it was more like an easy review for me.  But if I had not known this concept, was confused with fractions, or wasn't very good at math, this would be a good way to learn and understand them.  Jason was great at explaining the math problems, and he made them easy to understand.

Find Out More:  You can find out more online at ScienceandMath.comMastering 5th Grade Math - Volume 1 - Essentials of Fractions is just $15.99 {down from the list price of $21.99} for the DVD and $14.99 for the download.  You can save 10% by purchasing the Mastering 5th Grade Math Bundle for $57.56.  Mastering 5th Grade Math is recommended for grades 4-6.  You can also find them on Facebook.

Menu Plan Monday - March 10

http://orgjunkie.com/2014/03/menu-plan-monday-march-1014.html

Last Sunday was the final day of my 28-day Engine 2 Challenge, but like I said before, I'm still continuing on with it and eating a plant-based diet.

I don't have any pictures of food this week {I took a break from photographing my meals} but what we did have was really good.  We ate out a lot over the weekend and didn't get to the Pizza Potatoes or Happy Herbivore Pancakes, so those are on the menu again this week.

Friday night Funny Bunny had a sleepover at church, which I attended too.  The theme was Italian so thankfully they had spaghetti and marinara sauce for dinner.  I topped that with a ton of broccoli, and with the side salad, I was full most of the night.  I brought my own healthy snacks. :)

Saturday night we ate at Chilis and I ordered the Garden Salad with no cheese, a side of black beans, and a side of broccoli.

Sunday afternoon we ate at J. Alexander's and I had the Veggie Burger with a side of broccoli.

Oh, and if you like stats, I've lost 7lbs since Feb 3rd!!  Still need to get my cholesterol checked, but I'm very happy with how I am feeling!

For the menu this week our dinners will include:

Alphabet Soup
Super Easy Vegan Pan Thai
Pizza Potatoes
Happy Herbivore Pancakes

And snacks will include:

Easy Fudgy Vegan Chocolate Brownies
Vegan Chocolate Chip Peanut Butter Cake {this was really good}
Single Serving Blueberry Muffin {made this last night and will make again!!}

A Sense of the Resurrection: An Easter Experience for Families

A Sense of the Resurrection Guess what?!  The creator of Truth in the Tinsel has just announced the release of a new eBook leading up to Easter - A Sense of the Resurrection: An Easter Experience for Families.

We just got our hands on it and will be using it through the Lenten season, but if you are a fan of Truth in the Tinsel, I know you will love this book too!

There are a couple differences to note though.

It's only 12 activities instead of 24.  I think this is great because it's a busy time of year with school and activities.  So you could use it during the last 12 days leading up to Easter or spread it out to a few days a week through the whole Lenten season.  I think that's what we will do.

It's also touches on a heavier subject - Jesus' death and resurrection.  But Amanda has included a helpful page about how to best talk to your children about this hard to tackle subject.

And lastly, your children will not just be working on crafts.  There are neat activities, like baking bread for the Last Supper, which creates great memories for families.

This simple eBook includes printables, Scriptures and specific conversation and starting points so you and your kids can get a sense of the resurrection.

Find Out More: A Sense of the Resurrection: An Easter Experience for Families is available as an eBook for just $7.99.

A Sense of the Resurrection is on sale March 24-28th!  It will be 20% off with code OHEASTERClick on the picture below to get all the details and purchase your own copy.
