Wordsmith Apprentice Review

Funny Bunny and I had the opportunity to review Wordsmith Apprentice, a self- directed writing program for grades 4-6 in the Wordsmith Series.

I had never heard of Wordsmith, but after researching it, it looked promising and I was hoping Funny Bunny would like it!

And to top it off, it's one of Cathy Duffy's 100 Top Picks for Curriculum, so I couldn't go wrong!

About Wordsmith Apprentice:  

It's an easy to use writing course encouraging students to develop their writing skills as they participate in every role on a newspaper staff: editor, reporter, writer, etc. Children develop a love for writing as they express themselves through sentence and paragraph writing, persuasive writing, and much more. 

I knew right away after receiving this book that Funny Bunny would LOVE it...and she does!!  

It starts with a note to the student explaining that they will be working for a small town newspaper.  They'll start with little jobs like classified ads, picture captions, and "fillers."  They will then move on to advertising, book reviews, and recipes and finally they will become a "staff reporter" and be ready to write news stories and editorials. 

They start with a Application For Employment


Then they write their own.  Funny Bunny decided to write an Application For Cleaning Toilets {I was cracking up}

Homeschooling Just One

Back when we decided to homeschool, we didn't know that we would end up with just one child.   Fast forward to today and here we are, our daughter is almost 9 1/2 and she is an only child. 

So what is it like homeschooling just one child?  Is it easy?  Do I encounter the same challenges as other families, small and large?  Grab a cup of coffee (I know I am), sit back, relax, and take a trip into the life of Homeschooling an Only Child.


I am going to break this article up into two categories: Benefits and Challenges.  I want to start with our Challenges because I think that it is important to point out that families with only one child have similar struggles as larger families.


The first challenge that I face is motivating our daughter to get school started and then completed.  She does not have siblings that she can work with and she cannot compete with brothers and sisters to get assignments done or even challenge others in games.  Each day is a new challenge and can become a struggle at times. 


Another challenge that we face is boredom.  I try to rotate subjects and make things as fun as they can be, but to be honest, I'm sometimes not really good at that.  We may be in the house for a couple days in a row, and even the breaks in between subjects can get boring. 


The next challenge we face is giving constant attention.  With no other children in the house, I am next in line.  ;o)  She is pretty good about playing on her own and keeping herself occupied from time to time, but when that wears off, she comes to me.


The last challenge is not one we really face at home, but something I have noticed more and more, especially this year.  Since we are a family with just one child, I've noticed that it has been increasingly harder to find other families who want to get together (with only us).  Where I may be looking for one playmate who is close to our daughter's age, they are looking for playmates who are close in age to several of their children.  I'd like to add though, that I can totally understand this, and I don't mind getting together with several families, it's just something I've noticed. 


So what can be good about just having one child? 
Although we do get off track from time to time, I can get us back quickly and finish what we need to do each week.  It is not hard to meet the goals that I have made for the year.  We also have a lot of flexibility in our schedule and can attend most field trips and activities that come up each month.

I love that I can give all the one-on-one attention that is needed.  Our curriculum is pretty parent intensive.  I have to sit with her for almost every subject still, so it is a lot of work from me, but I enjoy spending that time with her. 


To conclude, I think all families, large and small, face unique but also similar challenges.  Some days are good and some are hard.  Some days I feel like the odd homeschooling family with just one child, but regardless, I know I enjoy homeschooling and wouldn't do anything differently.  :o)


Menu Plan Monday - September 24


Today is the start of WEEK 4 of eating a plant-based diet!  This past weekend we went to Disney and I was determined to make it through without failing terribly!  This was also the first time we bought their dining plan, so I had already made dinner reservations at some yummy buffet restaurants!  So here's what I ate:

Friday Lunch - Side salad and fruit cup from CFA on the way.

Friday Snack - Micky Pretzel {these are huge}!

Friday Dinner was at Boma at the Animal Kingdom Lodge.  Oh goodness, last time we ate here we all rolled out!!  We LOVE Boma!  Did you know that if you tell them when you get there that you have dietary needs, a chef will come out to talk to you?  The chef at Boma was wonderful!  He took me around the whole buffet line and told me what was in everything.  It was awesome!  Their buffet is sooo big, there was a ton I could eat that was meat and dairy free!  I filled two or three plates with veggie dishes and fruits.  They also have dairy free desserts in the back so I was able to eat a yummy raspberry sorbet with fruit and dairy free cookies.  I was STUFFED!!

Saturday Breakfast - Banana and coffee

Saturday Lunch - Every lunch place we checked had some sort of vegetarian/vegan dish.  I had a veggie/bean burger with grapes and apples on the side.

Saturday Snack - Wheat Thins

Saturday Dinner was at the Liberty Tree Tavern.  NOT the place you want to go for meat/dairy free eating...lol!  We had made these reservations a while back though, so I was stuck with it.  The chef came and I didn't have many options.  He gave me a heaping plate of plain veggies and I had a couple small rolls and a few bites of stuffing {bad idea}.  By the time he brought my raspberry sorbet with fruit out, my tummy was rumbling!  OH GOODNESS!  I'll spare you the details, but let's just say that I didn't come back to finish my dessert and hubby and Funny Bunny had eaten theirs and were outside watching fireworks when I came back.  I'm thinkin' there was dairy in there...lol! 

Sunday Breakfast - Banana and coffee

Sunday Lunch -  Hummus, Tomato, and Cole Slaw sandwich.  I'm sure the cole slaw had mayo but I didn't feel like a salad.

Sunday Snack - Popcorn

I DID IT!!!  Eating healthy at Disney!  Plus, with all that walking and...ahem...tummy trouble Sat night, I lost 1 lb...and was full pretty much the whole time!  I didn't feel like I missed out on anything.

Family Time Fitness Review

Are you homeschooling your children and wish you had a local and affordable P.E. option for them?

We have had a couple options in the past.  A Community Center about 30 minutes away use to offer free P.E. classes a couple times a week and I had heard they were pretty good but many times disorganized and chaotic.

Then our local YMCA started offering homeschool P.E. but they soon increased the prices and it wasn't close to being affordable, especially for those families with multiple children.

We now even have a Certified Personal Trainer and Child Fitness Specialist in our local homeschool group who just recently started classes.  Again, this is great, and her group rates are by far the cheapest, but for families who already have their schedules full, it's another day out of the house driving back and forth. 

What about an AFFORDABLE Physical Education program that you can do at HOME with ALL of your children...even their friends?

A Cry From Egypt Book Review

PhotobucketGreat Waters Press, which published the practical guide to Raising Real Men by Hal and Melanie Young, has two new books coming out.

I was given an opportunity to review one of the two and so I received A Cry From Egypt by Hope Auer.

PhotobucketHope Auer has been writing stories and plays actively since she was very young. Through her schooling years she developed a passion for history and telling stories which eventually culminated in the writing of “The Promised Land Series.” In addition to writing, Hope loves the Lord, life, church, family, and children. She was homeschooled and works and learns alongside her family, who are the first people to read her books. Hope has a heart for children that is evident as she helps in youth theatre, teaches piano, and writes stories. 

Funny Bunny and I were very excited to receive this book because we just happened to be reading about Egypt..and Moses.  Isn't it wonderful how God works things out like that?!

I assigned Funny Bunny to read at least a chapter a day.  She devoured this book!  Most of the time she wanted to read more than what was assigned.

Here is what she had to say about it: 

A Cry from Egypt by Hope Auer (Book One of The Promised Land) is a book about a little girl named Jarah, her sisters Tirzah and Shayna, her brothers Etain, Lemuel, Raphel, Yanni, and Ezra, and her mother and father (not to mention her friends Ada and Acenith).  For them, life is normal for average Hebrews - brick making for the boys and men and cleaning and cooking in the palace for girls and women.  Until suddenly, two men named Moses and Aaron enter the city and change things up.  First the water turns to blood, then flies – what are the Egyptians to do but let the people of Israel go?   

Will Ada be forced to marry Paki, the boy in the palace, and not Etain?  How will the family keep peace if Mother and Father have different beliefs?  What will the children, who are torn between the God of Israel and the gods of Egypt, choose to believe?  And will they ever be free?  

I liked A Cry from Egypt because it’s exciting, fun, and I couldn't wait to read what’s next (once I was assigned to read one chapter and I read three)!  It has friendship, love, and adventure and you don’t even notice you’re reading history.  It’s a great book for all ages (especially nine year olds!) 

She loved this book so much that she already wants to get the next book in The Promised Land Series!!

And what I love even more is that both the author and illustrator were homeschooled!  What a testimony to homeschooled children!  Funny Bunny loves to write and one of her aspirations is to write a book for children.  Through reading about Hope, she can see that with hard work, she can accomplish her goal!

Menu Plan Monday - September 17


This morning is busy so I'll be brief.  I stuck to the plan and have now gone 2 WEEKS meat and dairy FREE!  And it has been way easier than I thought it would be!

Here are some of the meals we ate last week and our thoughts:

Spinach and Artichoke Pie - This was good but I forgot to buy the Kalamata olives and we don't have any nutritional yeast yet.  I think it would be better with both so we are going to make this again once we have everything.

Vegetable Crock-Pot Pot Pie - We really liked this and are having it again this week.  It was very easy to make but when I make it again I will cut the potatoes smaller and cook on high for two hours.  They were not completely soft.

Easy Crockpot Lentil Soup - Hubby really liked this one but Funny Bunny gave it a thumbs down.

Burritos with Spanish Rice and Black Beans - Hubby and I both LOVED this one.  It made a ton of leftovers and it was very filling!  We knew Funny Bunny wouldn't eat it so we made it on a night she was with grandparents.

Vegetable Pizza with this Pizza Crust - This pizza crust is really good!  This will probably be a weekly meal.  We just leave off the cheese and add veggies.  Yum!


Banana Date Walnut Muffins - Everyone really liked these so I am going to make them again.  I didn't use dates or walnuts and I am going to reduce the sugar down to 1/4 cup because they were really sweet.

Spaghetti and Salad
Vegetable Crock-Pot Pot Pie
Slow Cooker Vegetarian Chili
Burritos with Spanish Rice and Black Beans

Ridiculously Easy Pineapple Sorbet

Homeschool Mother's Journal 9-14-12


In my life this week…  
 

I'm still working on eating a plant-based diet and it has actually
been easier than I thought!  Can't wait to share more thoughts about my week with you on Menu Plan Monday!

In our homeschool this week…  

Our new schedule is in full swing and this is the first week with all activities going at the same time.  Thank goodness we homeschool and there is no homework!!  Wednesdays and Fridays there are no extracurricular activities. 

Monday

Since the last time I posted, Funny Bunny finished Unit 10 ~ Early Greece and Rome and started Unit 11 ~ The Israelites Worship Idols in her Preparing Heart for His Glory book.


In science she is learning about the different types of trees.


In CBS we are studying Hebrews.  I opened her book so she could complete the first two lessons today and found these At-Home Challenges.  What a great idea!!

My favorite thing this week was…

Watching my little girl grow.  I can remember when she was in the youngest group at Awana and now she is in the 9-12 year old group with AHG.  She started ballet the month she turned 3 and now she is in Junior Company.  Mommy/baby playdates and now I'm dropping her off at friend's homes.  I'm with her everyday but it just seems like time if flying by.  ♥

Morning Devotion - Being Happy


I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want.  I can do all this through him who gives me strength. ~ Philippians 4:12-13

Don't wait for everything in your life to be perfect before you decide to be happy.  Too many people waste their lives dreaming about the time when they'll finally be happy, but while they are daydreaming, life is passing them by.  Follow Jesus and He will show you how to be happy today!!

Menu Plan Monday - September 10


It's been exactly 1 WEEK since starting my plant-based diet of trying to eliminate, or at least reduce, meat and dairy!

The results have been wonderful!  I have not eaten any meat and my dairy has been very limited to possibly two little creamers I used in my coffee.  I did have some Kashi crackers on Saturday, but pretty much everything else I ate included only fruits and vegetables or something I made from scratch at home, so I knew what was going into it, like bread and muffins.  :)

Friday through Sunday were challenging and I had lots of opportunities to eat bad...and believe it or not, there were several family members encouraging me to as well.  :/  I got through it though!

The question I am getting from just about everyone, is "How will Funny Bunny get calcium if she is not drinking milk."  Please leave a comment if I am leaving something out, but here is a short list of foods that provide calcium:

Daily vitamin
Calcium fortified OJ
Varieties of Tofu
Fortified cereals and breads
Green leafy vegetables
Soy milk
Beans, Nuts, Grains 
Some fruits

Remember this is a child who could live on PB&J, macaroni & cheese, hot dogs, hamburgers, and steak.  How is cutting out milk and eating tons of fruits and veggies not better?  Let's not worry about just calcium and look at the big picture though.  I am really trying to do my best researching this and think we are all getting a much more balanced menu than what we were eating before {Greasy Tacos, Pepperoni Pizza, Burgers, etc}.  Don't you think?

Slow Cooker Vegetarian Chili - We all LOVED this!!  Definitely making it again!

Rainbow Stirfry - We thought it was kinda bland. I'll be looking for another one.

Pizza crust - This was very good and easy to make and of course you can put anything you like on it.

Whether you are a homeschooler looking for advice and encouragement or an overwhelmed homemaker trying to get the house organized and dinner on the table, Everyday Homemaking has something for you.

Their website includes free recipes and articles and a great section called Kitchen Servants, which includes links to recommended mixers, grain mills, and cookware.  Oh yeah, and here is the page on the Vita-Mix...my dream appliance!  If you have some time, these pages have some great information! 

Photobucket They also have a wonderful Book Series.  I had the opportunity to review one of their books called Everyday Cooking.  

Everyday Cooking is a collection of tried-and-true recipes and hints for simple, everyday cooking with an emphasis on whole foods - from a busy homeschooling mother of eight. 

Here you can click on the preview to see a few sample pages.  The book includes photos, sample menus, shopping and equipment tips, and more than 125 recipes!!

Each month they feature some of the recipes from Everyday Cooking on their site.  Here are some sample recipes to try for free. 

My Thoughts:  I like how Everyday Cooking is laid out.  After a short Introduction it starts right away with Timesaving Tips and Breakfast Ideas.  It's then broken down into Appetizers & Dressings, Bread & Grains, Main Dishes, Soups, & Sides, and Desserts & Snacks.  In concludes with Basic Measurements and Helps, Meal Planning and Shopping Hints, Sample Menus and Checklists.

I do wish there were more pictures throughout.  There are a few like the one below, but I am visual and really like to see what the end result looks like for each recipe.  I do love the photo explanation in the Breads & Grains section!!


There were also helpful tips scattered about, which I thought were great.


Another thing I would have liked is for more recipe variations and substitutions.  There were several like the one below, but I would have liked more ways to alter the recipes due to allergies or to just make them healthier. 


I do think this is a great cookbook for mothers and daughters and a great resource for the busy mom.
