City Creek Press: Times Alive! Review

I have a confession to make.  I have been eyeing this product for many years now!  The product I'm talking about is called Times Alive!, by City Creek Press.  They use a fun and different way to present multiplication facts to children.  There is definitely no boring drilling of math facts here. 

What they do differently is take multiplication equations and put them to cute stories and songs.  This method helps children retain their math facts more quickly (and it is fun for them to learn)!

I think this would be a great product for those children who are brand new to multiplication and also for those who need help with memorization of their facts.  My daughter would be in the latter.  She has known her skip counting facts from 1 to 15 since Kindergarten (also to songs).  Now that she is in second grade though, she is starting multiplication, and although she does fairly well, she will use her skip counting songs to get the answer, which takes up time.  I want her to give quick answers without counting and Times Alive! has helped that with us! 

In this sample animated story for 6x8, you can see after the story, that when it is 6x8, 6 is the chef and the cake is in the shape of an 8.  The cake is "for the 8" (48).  You can also listen to a few sample songs, a music video (which happens to be one of our daughter's favorites), and several samples on their YouTube Channel!  She really loves the songs and I have to say that they are very catchy (which is why they help with retention so well)!

My Thoughts:  I love Times Alive! and would highly recommend it to anyone who is looking for a product to help their child with their multiplication facts. 

Thoughts of a 7-Year Old: I like Times Alive! My favorite thing are the Thirsty Sixes; which are 6x6 and thirty (thirsty) six (sixes). It's fine, but I don't like it... I love it! :)

Menu Plan Monday - January 31

I am just getting around to making our menu for the week, and still need to go out grocery shopping this morning, ugg!

Monday:  Vegetable Soup (with carrot juice as the base)
Tuesday:  Shrimp Scampi
Wednesday: Surprise from the in laws
Thursday:  Salmon Salad
Friday:  Chili

Here is the quick and easy Chili recipe:

Servings: 4 (you can double it for 8)
Prep Time: 1 hour, 45 min

Ingredients
1 lb lean ground beef
1/2 white onion, chopped
4 cloves garlic, minced
1 green bell pepper, diced
1/8 cup fresh Italian parsley, chopped
1 1/2 jalapenos, seeded and chopped (I leave these out)
1/8 cup fresh chili powder (I just use a little regular chili powder)
3/4 tsp ground cumin
1 1/2 cans low fat, red sodium beef broth
1/2 can (28oz) crushed tomatoes
1/2 can (15oz) kidney beans
1/2 can (15oz) chili beans
1/4 cup sharp red fat cheddar cheese, shredded

Directions
Place a large pot over med heat.  Add ground beef, onion, garlic, bell pepper, parsley, and jalapenos.  Cook, stirring occasionally, until the ground beef is no longer pink, about 8 min.

Stir in chili powder and cumin, cook for another 2 min.  Add beef broth, tomatoes, and beans, bring to a boil over high heat.  Reduce heat, cover, and simmer for 90 min.

Ladle a portion of chili (about 1 1/2 cups) into each bowl and top with about a tablespoon of cheese!  ENJOY!!

Weekly Wrap-Up #12

This week the weather was a little warmer so we were able to spend some much needed time outdoors.  It felt great to get out of the house!  Here are some of our highlights. 

The first was a game of kickball we played with some other homeschool families at a nearby park.  It was the first time our daughter had played kickball and she absolutely loved it!!  It was boys against the girls, and I was impressed on how well everyone played!  The three of us (and the dog), tried playing it in the front yard this afternoon, and although we had a fun (and silly) time, it was so fun with all the kids.  We are hoping to do that again soon!

The other highlight of our week included a "field trip" on Friday to the Extreme Makeover building site.  Extreme Makeover is in our town helping out a local family.  We drove about 20 minutes out to a church, got on a school bus "shuttle" that took us to the site, and watched some of the action.  The day we were out there they were putting up the frame.

It is amazing to me that the house will be completed in less than one week.  Our city and the surrounding area has really stepped up to help this family!  I can't believe all the materials and labor that have been donated.  It is definitely nice to see a town pull together to help someone.

Fit Mommy Friday

Oh goodness...let me start by saying that this was not my best week!  I did so well those first 3 weeks and must have forgot my objective when some goodies came my way.  :o(  We are all human though, right? 

I'll sum up my eating this week by describing it as a roller coaster.  Some days were good and some were not!  Exercising was the same way.  I didn't keep track, but I did work out several times, both upper and lower body workouts with weights.  I didn't get any runs in though.  I'm still feeling good and hopeful that today (and the majority of the weekend) will continue as positive. 

I weighed myself this morning and had gained a pound (the horror)!!!  My goal is to just get back on track and not worry about my setback.  I think it is important to remember that just because you may have one or two bad days, it does not mean that you need to give up.  Keep going and stick with it!!

My goals are to continue running, eat clean, and drink lots of water.

Holman Illustrated Bible Dictionary for Kids

The Holman Illustrated Bible Dictionary for Kids, sold by LifeWay Christian Stores, is a beautifully designed, eye-catching, easy to read, Bible reference for children. 

The moment I took this 200 page, hardcover book out of it's package, my daughter was instantly drawn to it.  As she flipped through, she recognized and read about many people, places, and items that she had already read about in the Bible.

I really wanted to incorporate this reference book into our weekly Bible studies.  So the week we were studying Ruth, I had our daughter look up the following words:  Ruth, Boaz, Obed, Moab, Grain, Famine, Kinsman (Redeemer). 

While studying Samuel, she looked up:  Samuel, Hannah, Shiloh, Eli, Tabernacle, and Ark of the Covenant. 

I will say that not every word we wanted to look up was found, like Naomi, but we found most of them.   I really like that my daughter can take what she is learning from the Bible to the next level. 

My Thoughts:  I really like this Bible Dictionary and would highly recommend it!  I like the sturdy hardcover and the brightly colored illustrations.  I especially like the maps and the special charts, like "Jewish Festivals and Feasts" and "Parables of Jesus".  There is even one named "Table of Weights & Measures in the Bible"...just in case you want to know the U.S. Equivalent of a Shekel.  :o)

Thoughts of a 7-Year Old:  The Bible Dictionary for Kids was really interesting and I started looking up names to see what they mean (not all of the names say). I really like it  and for all of my questions (such as 'what is an ark'), they are answered! I LOVE IT... lol!

Do You Have an Emergency Fund?

We all have those days...or weeks...or months, where it seems like one thing after another happens.  This was one of those months for us!!

It started off with our dog being taken to the emergency vet one Sunday evening, and then again to our regular vet the next day.  Thankfully she ended up being OK.

Then the engine light came on in my car so we took it to our mechanic to see what was wrong.  Thankfully nothing was.

Yesterday our air conditioning unit started making noise and was giving off a strange odor.  We have a guy coming out today to take a look (at least I hope he is coming today).  Praying it will be something small.

Tomorrow is our annual termite bond inspection.

Oh yeah, and when we purchased that electric piano for our daughter back at the beginning of the month, none of this had happened yet.  ;o)

And although each of these are minor in relation to other things, we can't wait for February to come!! 

So the point to my rambling about our crazy month is that it is a good idea to be prepared for times like these.  If you are not already setting aside money each paycheck for emergencies, you should.  If it would make it easier, you can set up a separate account at your bank.  You never know what is around the corner, so be prepared, and thankfully we were.

"Do not worry about anything, but in everything, by prayer let your requests be made known to God."  Philippians 4:6.

Burn Out ~ How To Avoid It?

It's the middle of the school year, you've been working in the same books for four or five months, the kids are getting restless, you're already thinking about going to the next homeschool convention...your family is getting burnt out!! 

So how do you avoid burn out in the first place? I think the best advice is to switch things up!  Simple changes in your school day will help to energize your family, giving them the push they need to finish the school year off with a bang.  Here are a few tips.

1.  Location, Location, Location.  Where are you currently doing your schoolwork?  Is it still working for your family?  If not, change it!  Go to the library once a week and get school done there.  Switch from the schoolroom to the kitchen, or the kitchen to the dining room.  Kids love these small changes and it may make a bigger difference than you think.

2.  Change Your Material.  Is there a certain subject that your child is frustrated with?  Change it up a bit.  Instead of reading from your science text book, find a chapter book on the same subject and have them read that (or read it to them).  Find a fun math program online that you can substitute for their regular math work.  There are tons of FREE program out there, you just need to look for them. 

3.  Go Outside.  When was the last time you took your children outside for a nature study or even for just a walk or bike ride?  I know this time of year it is too cold in some places, but even a break to play in the snow is what they may need to get their day going.

4.  Get Out Those Crafts.  Has it been a while since your 3rd grader got out the crafts?  Crafts are fun for all ages and can be made to go along with what they are studying.  Collages are easy and kids love to cut pictures out of magazines.  Give them some legos and have them make the animals who live in that habitat you are studying. 

5.  Experiment Day.  Why not set a day aside every once in a while for experiments?  Science experiments, recipe experiments, playdoh experiments.  Expect a mess and don't worry about it.  Hands on learning is the best kind of learning.

6.  Time Off.  Maybe what your family needs is some time off.  Go on a day trip to a museum, to the park, or to the movies.  Taking time off school and spending the day doing something fun as a family may be just the thing you need to re-energize!

I hope some of my tips have helped.  I know when we have begun to burn out, I have tried each of these at different times, and they always seem to help!

Couponing 101: Part 1

So you want to start couponing but are not quite sure how?  I couponed for about a year, and although I don't as much anymore, I thought I would share some tips!

What is Couponing and Why Should I Start?  Couponing is the practice of matching a coupon with an item in a store.  It's best matched when the item is on sale to get the lowest price possible.  Getting started is easy and can save you a lot of money on items you are planning to purchase anyway.

Where Can I Find Coupons?  There are several places to find coupons.  Here are a few you can start with:

The Sunday Paper
The Internet
In the Mail
In Magazines
On a Purchased Product
In Stores

How Do I Get Started?  Pick one store and start there.  When I started, I went all-in and became quite overwhelmed with all the stores I was visiting.  I spent a lot of time in the car going from one store to the other.  Don't get me wrong, I did save a TON of money...but I also spent a TON of time on doing it.  Try starting with your grocery store first, and once you have that mastered, add other stores. 

Collecting Coupons.  The first thing you need to do is start collecting coupons.  If you don't subscribe to the Sunday paper, you can start now, or just pick one up each week at the grocery store.  Or, if you are like me, check with family and friends who live close by, who can give you their coupon inserts.  It is best if you can get at least two copies of the weekly inserts, but starting out with just one is fine.  Try to collect your coupons for at least a month before you start couponing.  You'll need to have a good supply before you start getting the best deals!

Now That I Have Coupons, What Do I Do With Them?  Good question!  There are several ways people organize their coupons.  I don't like to waste a lot of time on clipping coupons I don't use, so I do not clip coupons until I need them.  I organize my coupons into three-ring binders, based on the type of insert.  For instance, the inserts in the Sunday paper include:  SmartSource (SS), Red Plum (RP), and Procter and Gamble (P&G).  I made one binder for each type.  Once I separate the three types, I would put the date I received them on the top of the insert.  The date would go on the top of all three, I would punch holes in them, place a tab on the end with the date (or separate them with a divider with the date), and put them in the corresponding binder.  The most current inserts go on top.  There is a reason for this method, and I will explain that in the next lesson.

So that is all there is to get started with couponing.  Once you have a few weeks of coupon inserts collected, you can really start saving money on your grocery bills!  I'll continue with Couponing 101: Part 2 next week, so stay tuned!!

Menu Plan Monday - January 24

As I am getting ready to make this post, I am wondering what day of the week most of you grocery shop.  My grocery day is either Sunday or Monday.  I like to get it done on Sunday if I can, so it doesn't interrupt our homeschool on Monday.  But things happen and sometimes my daughter and I will have to make a run out on Monday morning. 

So here is my menu for the week. I'll mark which ones are new.

Sunday: Shrimp, Jasmine Rice, and Corn on the Cob
Monday: Chili (new recipe)
Tuesday: Black Bean Soup
Wednesday: My in laws are cooking tonight and I'm not sure what they are making yet. 
Thursday: Chicken Enchiladas
Friday: Asian Beef Stirfry

My husband is loving the Chicken Enchiladas so I outlined the recipe below.  It is quick and easy to make, plus it is pretty healthy!

Servings: 4
Preparation Time: 50 min

Ingredients:
1lb of Chicken Breast
4 Green Onions
2 Tbsp Fresh Cilantro, Chopped (I don't use this)
1 Jalapeno, seeded and minced (I don't use this)
3 Cans (10oz each) Green Enchilada Sauce
8 Corn Tortillas
1 Cup Reduced Fat Cheddar Cheese, Shredded
2 Cups Lettuce, Shredded
1/2 Cup Salsa
1/2 Cup FF Sour Cream
1 Tomato, Diced
1 Can Ripe Olives, Sliced

Directions:
Preheat oven to 350.  Coat a 9"x13" baking dish with cooking spray.  Bring chicken to boil in a pot, reduce heat to medium and simmer until no longer pink or 15 min. Shred with two forks and set aside. 

Lightly coat a skillet with cooking spray over medium heat.  Add green onions, cilantro, and jalapeno; saute for 2 min.  Add chicken and 1 can of sauce.  Cook, sirring until heated through, about 5 min.

Pour remaining 2 cans of sauce in a bowl and microwave for 2 min until warm.  Dip each tortilla in the sauce and fill with about 1/8 of the chicken mixture. Roll up and place, seam side down, in the baking dish.

Pour remaining heated sauce over the enchiladas and sprinkle with cheese.  Bake for about 15 min.

Top with lettuce, salsa, tomatoes, sour cream, and olives.

** Just a note to say that even though the green enchilada sauce says "mild" it is a little spicy so we eat this on the night our daughter is out with my parents for dinner.  You could substitute the red sauce instead.
