Doorposts: Beauty in the Heart Review

 photo doorpostlogo_zpsa7a5d5e4.jpg

If you haven't already heard of Doorposts, you need to check them out!  I've been a fan of their Biblically based character training charts for many years now.  This post isn't about all of their wonderfully useful charts though, it's about a brand new product of theirs called Beauty in the Heart

photo BeautyCover_zpsd1ccc789.jpg Beauty in the Heart is a Study of Godly Beauty for Young Women, designed for ages 10-12 and up.  Included are ten in-depth studies that focus on godly women like Ruth and Esther, and on what the Bible says about discretion, modesty, adornment, true beauty, and more.

Each of the ten studies are divided into seven days, each with assignments. Here you can see a few sample pages.

Students will learn how to:

* Compare one passage of Scripture with another
* Observe repeated words and themes in a passage
* Outline the content of a passage
* Gather all of Scripture's words about a particular topic
* Study the lives of people in the Bible...and more

I was very excited to receive Beauty in the Heart as this is an important topic for young women ages 10 and up. I felt at this time though, it was a little too in-depth for Funny Bunny, who just turned 10 in May, so I worked on it solo.

To be honest, it took me some time to get into it.  The first study required a lot of reading.  All of 1 Peter to be exact.

I really started enjoying it more during Study 2, which is only of 1Peter 3:3-4: Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold jewelry or fine clothes. Rather, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight.

I loved that the author dedicated an entire week to just these two verses because there is so much that young women can learn from them.

Study 3 switched from a Verse Study to a Character Study.  And it is a character study of Sarah!!  There is so much to learn about Sarah in the Bible!  What a wonderful example she is of faithfulness!

A helpful feature throughout the book are small shaded boxes in the margins.  They list recommended materials, helpful study tips, and useful websites and resources.  Each study also ends with a box listing further study options.

My Thoughts:  I think Beauty in the Heart is well laid out.  I like the daily work and appreciate that it's thought provoking.  It is definitely an in-depth Bible study, so you will want to take a look at the sample pages to make sure your child is ready for it.

Find Out More:  You can find out more online at DoorpostsBeauty in the Heart is for ages 10-12 and up and is just $14 for the softcover book or $10 for the ebook.  And as a special bonus, use the coupon "beautystudy" in your shopping cart to get a free instant-download PDF copy of the Bible study when you order the printed workbook {ends 8/31}.

My Crewmates are also reviewing Beauty in the Heart, so you can check out what they think HERE.

Glee Gum: Make Your Own Chocolate Kit Review

I posted back in May about our experience with Glee Gum's Chewing Gum Making Kit and this weekend Funny Bunny and I had the opportunity to try their Make Your Own Chocolate Kit

Everything you need to make your delicious chocolate is included in the kit!

The instructions were simple!  We chose to use the microwave instead of the stove top because I know how impatient Funny Bunny can be with cooking.  ;)

Included in the kit is also some great information on chocolate and how the pods are harvested and beans fermented.  I didn't even know the beans had to ferment.  There was also a lesson on tempering the chocolate, which is one of the things we had to do.

Below Funny Bunny is holding up a cacao bean.  Two were included so we could taste it.  Overall consensus was that they were super bitter!

It was suggested that we fill our cups with peanut butter and/or marshmallows, so that is what we did!

Then the pouring began!  YUM!!!

The final product was some delicious chocolate!!

Thoughts of a 10-Year Old:  I liked Make Your Own Chocolate Kit a lot!  The instructions were simple to follow, and I learned a lot about making chocolate.  The chocolate-making was fun, though it took a while to temper and it was messy.  I think that it was interesting to see that from that little teeny weeny cacao bean created the start of not only the delicious chocolate we made, but chocolate in stores around the world!  But I think the best part was eating the chocolates we made.  Yum!

Find Out More:  You can find out more online at Glee Gum.  The Make Your Own Chocolate Kit is only $13.95.  Great for ages 8 and up!  There's also a lesson plan for grades 5-8 at the chocolate link above.

Homeschool Mother's Journal 8-23-13

In our homeschool this week…

Funny Bunny completed Unit 2: The First Cities After the Flood in Heart of Dakota's Creation to Christ.

Below is her notebook page for all of Unit 2.  Each day she is asked to complete a different section.

For Geography they are using A Child's Geography and will be learning about Turkey for the first few weeks.  Below is her Travel Log from the first unit.

For her history project, she had to make clay a clay seal and tablet and roll the seal over the tablet to create markings.

She is still really enjoying Poetry and Art, which go together.  Every week they learn a new poem and paint a watercolor picture of a scene that goes along with it.  Below is an excerpt from the poem and a painting of a spring.

For Science we are using Apologia's Land Animals of the Sixth Day and below is an Animal Tracks book that she was asked to make.  She'll be adding to it each week.

I'm also happy to report that Saxon Math is going way better than expected!!  I'm very happy with it so far!  Right now she's mostly doing review though, so I'll be interested to see how it goes later on.

Oh, and we have been working on Your Business Math: Pet Store in our free time.  Funny Bunny has named her store, ordered the inventory, set prices, and is ready for the grand opening, which is coming soon!  Here's a sneak peek {I think she is still working on the sign}.

Books Funny Bunny is reading independently...

Books I am reading aloud to Funny Bunny...

In my life this week…

Once again, nothing too exciting {I know you're so jealous}. School, dance, and blogging mostly.  I have started to help teach the Wednesday night 4th grade small group class so I've spent a little time preparing for that.  That's about it for me though.

The Candle Classic Bible Review

The Candle Classic Bible is a beautifully illustrated, hardback Bible retold in 365 stories. Funny Bunny and I were both very excited to receive it and she immediately took it and began reading.

Each story is divided into easy-to-read sections with Scripture references.  Children will be encouraged to spend family time together, reading a new story each day.

With traditional illustrations, and clear, well-written text, these best-loved stories will become timeless classics for children and parents alike.

My Thoughts:  I was very pleased when we received The Candle Classic Bible in the mail.  I love the hardcover and the pictures are beautifully drawn.  As you can see by the picture above, this Bible story book is geared to around 8-10 year olds.  The stories are not that long so I think it's a great and simple way to read just one story a day, especially if you have a child who is not yet ready to read the Bible on their ownAnd with 365 stories {261 Old Testament and 104 New Testament}, it has many more than what you will find in smaller Bible story books.

I do want to make a note that although the stories may be easy to read for younger children, the illustrations are not brightly colored and definitely have a more mature and darker feel to them

Thoughts of a 10-Year Old:  The Candle Classic Bible has well-worded stories for younger kids to read and understand. The pictures were really pretty, also. I think that it was a very good story Bible and I really liked it.

Find Out More:  You can find out more online about The Candle Classic Bible at Kregal Publications.  It is just $14.99 for hardcover and recommended for ages 8-10.

Homeschool Mother's Journal 8-16-13

In our homeschool this week…

Funny Bunny finished her first week of Fifth Grade and it went really well.  She completed Unit 1: The Beginning of History and of Sin in Creation to Christ.

This is the first year she is using a Student Notebook that goes along with the Teacher's Guide and I really like it.  I know it will be a wonderful keepsake when she is done.

For Science she started reading Apologia's Land Animals of the Sixth Day.  Below is a notebooking assignment she completed.

I think our favorite subject has been Art, which goes along with Poetry.  Here is Funny Bunny's watercolor painting and poem excerpt.

In my life this week…

Well, you pretty much read about it.  I'm TIRED!!  I've been working hard to keep us on track and apparently, it's hard work...lol!  We were however, able to finish school around noon several days in a row, so that was the reward!!

First Day of 5th Grade

Yesterday was Funny Bunny's first day of 5th grade!  We are trying some new things, like getting up earlier and more independent work, so this first week will be a little trial and error.

Today is day 2 and we are just a bit tired and moving a little slower this morning.  ;)

My posts will be lighter this week as we get into a groove.  If you've started school already, I'd love to hear how your year is going so far.

And if you would like to see what we will be using this year, check out our Curriculum Plans for 5th Grade.
