Weekly Wrap-Up: Third Grade #18

It is 3am and I'm up because Funny Bunny woke up with a bit of a tummy ache.  Now that she is asleep and I am awake, what better time to finally write about our week.

This week we finished Unit 25 ~ Life Out in the Wild West in our Heart of Dakota book, Bigger Hearts for His Glory.

We are reading A Pioneer Sampler together for Science and Funny Bunny is reading If You Traveled West in a Covered Wagon.  She is enjoying learning more about the pioneers in this period, but we both agree that we would not have wanted to live then, even though it is fun to sometimes pretend.

In her Jr Homemaker's class she has gone from cookie decorating...

This week we will be busy volunteering at the county fair taking in children's art projects and Funny Bunny will also be participating in a Living Wax Museum that a friend is hosting.  It looks like close to 50 children will be in it this year.  She will be Mary Chilton, a young girl who was on the Mayflower.

I was hoping to get some plants and vegetables from the store to plant today since the weather has been so nice, but we'll have to see how Funny Bunny is feeling first.

Weekly Wrap-Up: Third Grade #17

This week we finished Unit 18 ~ Robert Fulton and the First Steamboat in our Heart of Dakota book, Bigger Hearts for His Glory.

Reading

We are still reading the same three books, and although Funny Bunny is only supposed to only read a chapter a day in Toliver's Secret, she loved it so much she finished it today.  I think we have a book about Daniel Boone that I may slip in for next week since she finished early.  :)

Science

Learning about how plants and funguses grow differently and have different purposes, as does everything in the woods.

Dance / Piano

Funny Bunny is still taking four dance classes a week, along with 30 minutes of piano.  She is enjoying them all {although ballet is not her favorite anymore because they have to stretch so much...it's almost like actual work...lol!}

She has a piano recital in two weeks that she is excited about.  Her and her teacher will be playing two songs together.  I have only heard them play together through a closed door, so I am really looking forward to the recital!

Community Bible Study

We are still participating in CBS each week and studying Luke.  The women in the program are great, especially the teachers, and the children in the classes so sweet!  They all get together so nicely and I love to see them grow together, both in friendships and in Christ.

Nature

We found this little guy {or gal} on the inside of our screen today.  Funny Bunny saved him and placed him on one of our trees.  The weather here has been changing daily, some days have been close to freezing and others, like today, have been gorgeous.  The high today is in the low 70's and we are enjoying it with the windows open.

Weekly Wrap-Up: Third Grade #16

This week we finished Unit 17 ~ Daniel Boone Heads West started Unit 18 ~ Robert Fulton and the First Steamboat in our Heart of Dakota book, Bigger Hearts for His Glory.

History

We have been reading about Daniel Boone and how he and his family and friends moved west to settle Kentucky.  He loved the wilderness and had many close calls with the Indians.

Writing

We started Student Writing Intensive (SWI) A from the Institute for Excellence in Writing last week.  Funny Bunny finished the first lesson today...so far so good! 

Lesson One includes watching part of the first dvd where Andrew Pudewa teaches the lesson.  He is teaching a live class of children and it is very interactive and fun to watch.  (Funny Bunny liked it so much that she wanted to watch it again the next day)  Topics include Key Word Outlines and Summarizing from Notes and she completed both on stories about the Desert Tarantula and Pillbug. 

Next week the same topics will be continued on three new stories about Starfish, Oysters, and Pearls.

Good with some errors {but I'm not making a fuss over them}

Weekly Wrap-Up: Third Grade #15

Last week we finished Unit 14 ~ At the Time of the American Revolution and and this week we finished Unit 15 ~ Battles During the Revolutionary War in our Heart of Dakota book, Bigger Hearts for His Glory.

Books:

Read Aloud:  Rabbit Hill
Independent:  The Indian in the Cupboard
Science:  One Small Square: Woods

History:

Funny Bunny read about the battle between British General Cornwallis and American General Washington.  Cornwallis had backed Washington against the frozen Delaware River but Washington used initiative to outsmart Cornwallis and snuck around him to Princeton. 

Art:

Funny Bunny has started using Artistic Pursuits.  The lessons are simple and to the point and I'll be telling you more about it in my upcoming review.  For now, here is FB's drawing from Lesson One.

Activities:

Each year we participate in Operation Christmas Child through Samaritan Purse.  This year FB packed her shoebox and we dropped it off on Thursday.  You have to check out the video at the above link of Scotty McCreedy packing a shoebox.  He was FB's pick on American Idol so she was excited to watch it.  :)

Weekly Wrap-Up: Third Grade #14

Between vacations and field trips, we have either been out of town or out of the house on Fridays, so I haven't posted a Weekly Wrap-Up in a few weeks. 

Last I posted, we finished Unit 11 in Bigger Hearts for His Glory.  As of today, we have finished Unit 14 - At the Time of the American Revolution.  Here are some highlights:

In Science I finished reading aloud John Audubon: Young Naturalist, which Funny Bunny really enjoyed.  She likes to bird watch and does a great job drawing birds as well.

This week we started reading One Small Square: Woods, which I think is the perfect book for the time period.

In History, Funny Bunny learned about Washington's early years.  We especially liked his 110 Rules of Civility and Decent Behavior.  We saw this book in several of the book stores in Williamsburg and thought many of the rules were very silly.  :)

She also learned about how transportation has changed over the years. 

All other subjects are moving along nicely. I'm especially happy with Rightstart Math D.  I've mentioned before about Funny Bunny's struggles in level C, but this year has been much better.  I am taking it a bit slower and we just finished up with lesson 49.  Most of the lessons are review, but that is great because I am hoping by the end of 3rd grade she will have a solid grasp of all her multiplication tables. 

She is reading The Indian in the Cupboard, to herself, which she is enjoying, and we are reading aloud Rabbit Hill, which I wrote about here.

I wrote about our trip to Williamsburg here and here and we also took a camping trip to the beach last week, which was very windy and chilly.

Since getting back home from our trip to Colonial Williamsburg, we are still not back into a perfect school routine.  So I thought I would show you some pictures of the various occupations we saw.  Depending on the occupation, you train as an apprentice for between four and seven years.

Weekly Wrap-Up: Third Grade #12

This week we went on vacation to Williamsburg, Virginia.  We are actually still on vacation and coming home tomorrow but I thought I would post a few pictures of our trip now.  I'll talk about it a little more when we are back home and settled.

Weekly Wrap-Up: Third Grade #11

In the past two weeks we have finished up Unit 10 ~ Benjamin Franklin: Printer, Doctor, and Inventor and Unit 11 ~ Slavery in the Colonies, in our Heart of Dakota book, Bigger Hearts for His Glory.

In science Funny Bunny has been reading about John Audubon.  She drew some of the birds mentioned in the first few chapters.

In history we learned that it was Benjamin Franklin who wrote and printed an almanac under the alias Poor Richard.  Did you know it was him who wrote all those famous sayings?

And here is a kite she painted as we finished up Benjamin Franklin.

 
Every week Funny Bunny has to define a few words that were included in her history lesson.  After she writes the definition, she has to write the word in a complete sentence.  I thought this one was cute.  In case you can't read it, it says:

Tavern - a place where beer and liquor are sold and drunk.
The tavern's packed!  It's only Thursday!

Our vegetable garden seems to be doing well.  The cucumber and squash plants are growing like crazy!

And we are all looking forward to a weekend where the highs are only supposed to be in the 80s!!  Thanks goodness for cooler weather.  :)
