Weekly Wrap-Up: Third Grade #11

In the past two weeks we have finished up Unit 10 ~ Benjamin Franklin: Printer, Doctor, and Inventor and Unit 11 ~ Slavery in the Colonies, in our Heart of Dakota book, Bigger Hearts for His Glory.

In science Funny Bunny has been reading about John Audubon.  She drew some of the birds mentioned in the first few chapters.

In history we learned that it was Benjamin Franklin who wrote and printed an almanac under the alias Poor Richard.  Did you know it was him who wrote all those famous sayings?

And here is a kite she painted as we finished up Benjamin Franklin.

Every week Funny Bunny has to define a few words that were included in her history lesson.  After she writes the definition, she has to write the word in a complete sentence.  I thought this one was cute.  In case you can't read it, it says:

Tavern - a place where beer and liquor are sold and drunk.
The tavern's packed!  It's only Thursday!

Our vegetable garden seems to be doing well.  The cucumber and squash plants are growing like crazy!

And we are all looking forward to a weekend where the highs are only supposed to be in the 80s!!  Thanks goodness for cooler weather.  :)

So how was your week?  Thanks for joining Our Homeschool Reviews and for more Weekly Wrap-Up, this week I am linked up with Kris over at Weird, Unsocialized Homeschoolers.

My Memories Suite Review & Giveaway

I'm going to be honest...I'm not very good at scrapbooking.  Many years ago I bought some scrapbooking products and I still have an unfinished baby book in the box.  Not only does bringing all that stuff out make a huge mess, but I am really not that creative.

But, when I found out about My Memories Suite Digital Scrapbooking Software, I was intrigued!

No mess, digital, easy to use...I was hooked immediately!

You simply download the software and you are ready to go.  You can create an album from their pre-made designer templates or start from scratch and create your own.

Once downloaded, I immediately went to My Memories website and added many of their free digital scrapbooking kits to my software, which was simple to do.  That gave me even more options at no additional cost.

Below is one that I downloaded for free.  All the images can be moved around or deleted and new ones can be added.  I made some slight changes, but not many.

Below is one that I purchased using a special Facebook promo code if you like their page.  I did not make any changes to it.  I just love the design!!

So why would you want to buy this software?

* It's customizable!  You can even add video, narration, or music!
* You can watch your memories on your Mac, PC, iPod, or TV
* Share it with friends on Facebook, Flickr, Twitter, and more
* Print bound photobooks, cards, and calendars!

The best feature, for me personally, is that you can export each page individually to a JPEG.  Then you can upload those pages, which are now like pictures, to any album making website!  That way you can make your own custom photo album, and you do not have to rely on the basic templates you are given.

Find Out More:  You can find out more by visiting MyMemories.com.  The My Memories Suite Software is just $39.97 BUT if you use the code STMMMS99585 you will get $10 off the purchase of the software AND a $10 coupon for the My Memories Store (a $20 value)!!!

My Memories has also created a blog with tutorials and a forum to help make learning more about their software and digital scrapbooking kits easy!  Their short video tutorials are wonderful!

Dolphin Tale

If you were not lucky enough to catch Dolphin Tale during it's opening weekend, you absolutely have to go the first chance you get!

Just in case you didn't know, Friday, September 23rd was Homeschool Day.  Homeschool Day is a designated day where homeschooling families and groups from around the country gather at their local movie theater to support family friendly films.  This year the film picked was Dolphin Tale.  We went with about 20 friends in our homeschool group.

Dolphin Tale is a true story about a boy and the dolphin he found caught in a crab trap.  The dolphin, whose name is Winter, was saved, but she ends up losing her tail.  She finds a way to swim by moving her tail from side to side but this unusual movement starts causing damage to her spine.  They determine that the only way to save her is to build a prosthetic tail.

This is such a feel-good family movie, but it's one that adults, as well as kids, homeschooled or not, will enjoy!  The young actress in the movie is actually homeschooled herself, both in real life and in the movie.  And the boy who is helping with Winter's rehabilitation, realizes (along with his mom) that he is learning so much more in this hands-on environment, than he ever will in the classroom.

My brief explanation only touches the surface of this movie so you really need to go and see it for yourself...just make sure to bring some tissues.  ;)

If you would like to learn more about the Homeschool Movie Club, you can go here and you can also find them on Facebook.  Dolphin Tale is rated PG and you can read more about the movie and its rating at Kids in Mind.

You can also learn more about the real Winter at SeeWinter.com

Disclosure:  This product was not given to Our Homeschool Reviews, I just loved it and wanted to share my review of it with you.  I have received no compensation from it and all opinions and experiences within this review are my own.

Theo Review and Giveaway!

Good, wholesome, and Biblical programing for children is so hard to find these days.  Funny Bunny and I really do not watch any TV during the day and I would personally rather just pop in a pre-approved movie than scan through what may be showing on the various "family" channels.

So as I am always excited to learn more about Christian programming, I was happy to receive a copy of the sample DVD Introducing Theo: Teaching Children God's Word.  This DVD contains two episodes: Saving Faith and Good News.

From the publisher:

Theo Presents is centered around the adventures and teachings of the main character, Theo, a student of Godʼs Word. Theo lives in a cozy corner of a quaint English village, in the heart of the Cotswolds, and entertains many guests, including two mice, Belfry and Luther.

The animation series of Theo guides children and adults through a careful study of systematic theology. Theo discusses doctrines about sin, Godʼs character, the Bible, salvation and godly living with easy-to-understand illustrations that make children want to learn more about the Christian faith.

My Thoughts:  I enjoyed the two short episodes we watched and I liked that they each teach from the Bible.

Thoughts of an 8-Year Old: I like Theo's teaching and think his videos are a good way to learn the Bible and laugh, too. I enjoyed them!

Find Out More:  You can find out more about Theo by visiting Theo Presents online.  Theo: God's Love is available for purchase for only $14.99.  It includes Episode 1: Saving Faith, Episode 2: Loving Obedience, Episode 3: Forgiveness, Bonus Episode: Good News, and Special Features: Animation Basics and A Chat with Mike Joens, the Creator of Theo.

You can also visit Theo on Facebook, Twitter, and on Amazon (where the DVD can be purchased for just $12.49).  And there is a FREE App you can download for games, activity pages, coloring pages, notes on the episodes, and a chance to watch upcoming episodes.

They have also partnered with Lifeway Christian resources in creating curriculum to compliment their Theo series, which you can find more information on here
