IEW U.S. History-Based Writing Lessons Review

Today I'm going to take a few minutes to tell you about the Institute for Excellence in Writing and one of their theme-based writing products, U.S. History-Based Writing Lessons.

The mission of the IEW is "to equip teachers and teaching parents with methods and materials which will aid them in training their students to become confident and competent communicators and thinkers."

IEW offers curriculum for children K-12, college students, special needs, English Language Learners, and Professional Development.

Over the years we have used several IEW products and have enjoyed each one. Today I'll be sharing with you some of my thoughts about their U.S. History-Based Writing Lessons.

We received the spiral bound Teacher/Student Combo which includes both the Teacher's Manual and Student Book.

I love that with this curriculum, the student is developing their writing, while learning about important people and events in U.S. history from Christopher Columbus to the twentieth century. 

The Teacher's Manual starts with a short Introduction, suggested weekly schedule, and scope and sequence. There are a total of 30 lessons and each can be completed in just four days. This is great for a day off or a day to catch up. Each lesson in the Teacher's Manual mirrors the Student Book, as well as gives suggestions, teaching tips and examples to help guide the students. It also includes lesson planning tips, vocabulary quizzes, and answer keys.

The Student Book also includes a short Introduction, suggested weekly schedule, and scope and sequence. In addition, it contains assignments, instructions, source texts, blank outlines, checklists, sample compositions, and vocabulary cards.

The Student Resource Packet is necessary for this curriculum. If you have purchased the curriculum, there are instructions to download it in both the Teacher's Manual and Student Book. The packet includes things like charts, reminders, style samples, tips, exercises, and word lists. It is a great resource!

Lessons follow IEWs Structure and Style course layout, starting with key word outlines, and moving on to dress ups, sentence openers, decorations, mechanics, and structure of the introduction, body and conclusion. Each step builds upon the last and the student goes from note taking to retelling to summarizing to finally a formal essay.

I highly recommend IEWs U.S. History-Based Writing Lessons, especially if you would like to integrate U.S. history into your writing. Other writing curriculum includes Ancient History (grades 3-8), Medieval History (grades 6-8), and Advanced U.S. History (grades 9-12).

Memoria Press: Classical Composition I: Fable Set

We have used many Memoria Press products in the past, but I have yet to try their writing and grammar program, Classical Composition. So as you can imagine, I was interested in taking a look at it.

As I've mentioned before, Memoria Press is a family-run publishing company that produces simple and easy to use classical Christian education materials for home and private schools. Memoria Press’ educational philosophy can be best described as classical Christian education.

Something interesting about Classical Composition is that it is based on the original classical method of teaching writing called the “progymnasmata.” This is something completely new to me. Progymnasmata is Greek for "preliminary exercises." These exercises were taught in ancient Greece and Rome to boys so they could learn the art of speech writing. It involved learning fourteen skills, organized from very simple to more complex.

Classical Composition 1: Fable Stage, is the first of the fourteen skills. In the Fable Stage, students begin learning how to use and imitate words, using Aesop's Fables. I received the Classical Composition: Fable Stage Set. 

It's really an interesting process of learning. The Teacher's Guide is very helpful in planning each day. It takes the instructor step-by-step, so there is no questions as to what to do next. 

The process is outlined below - 

1. The Fable - First the fable, which is included, is read aloud to the student. It's helpful to read it a few times, letting the child read it aloud if they can. Then review and discuss new vocabulary, and discuss and write down three plot components, recognition, reversal, and suffering. Lastly the student can narrate back the fable if they are able to. 

2. Variations Part 1 - The Variations help students to paraphrase words and sentences. Two sentences are given and they have to come up with synonyms for different words and then come up with three new sentences. You can see some samples above.

3. Outline - Outlining the fable may seem a little daunting to a child, but the guide provides help and prompts. 

4. Narration - The student retells the story with the help of their outline. They should not be referring back to the original story. 

5. Paraphrase 1 - Here they will use their outline and sentences from Variations Part I to write the story in their own words. Prompts are included to come up with creative sentences. 

6. Paraphrase 2 - During this second paraphrase, the student rewrites the story but with inverting the sequence of events.

7. Variations Part 2 - Two more sentences are given and they must again change the selected words.

8. Final Draft - Using paraphrase 1 or 2, students correct and rewrite the story in their own words.

Did you get all that?  Seems like a lot, and at first was a little confusing, but after reading through it all, I now understand it's purpose. And the best part is that if you get the set, the DVD is included. I highly recommend getting the DVD because it leads the student through the entire process.

You can split this up however you would like. Each step can be done in a day, or two steps can be combined in one.

Levels cover each of the fourteen skills:

Fable (4th) 
Narrative (5th) 
Chreia & Maxim (6th) 
Refutation & Confirmation (7th) 
Common Topic (8th) 
Encomium, Invective & Comparison (9th) 
Characterization (10th) 
Description (11th)

It's recommended students begin in 4th or 5th grade, but those who start at 6th grade or higher can catch up by completing two courses in one year.

I mentioned a couple weeks ago that I am excited to share with you the reviews that I will have coming up over the next couple months.

Fix-It! Grammar Review

My daughter, Funny Bunny, is a self-professed editor.  She has a knack for finding grammatical errors in books and she enjoys correcting other people's writings. So when I heard about Fix-It! Grammar from the Institute For Excellence in Writing, I was interested in what she would think about it.

I received Fix It! Grammar: The Nose Tree Teacher's Manual Book 1 and Fix It! Grammar: The Nose Tree Student Book 1.

There are six books in the Fix It! Grammar series and each builds off the previous.

* The Nose Tree
* Robin Hood
* Frog Prince, or Just Deserts
* Little Mermaid
* Chanticleer
* Sir Gawain and the Green Knight

In each book, students hunt for and correct errors in daily passages that tell a story.  The books are for elementary through high school, and although it's recommended that all students begin with The Nose Tree: Book 1, there is a placement test on their website.

The Nose Tree is broken into 33 weekly lessons with 4 days of work each week. Each week a new topic is introduced, like Pronouns or Quotations, and discussed.  Each day has just one sentence or one part of a sentence that needs to be labeled, corrected, and re-written.  For students who are new to grammar, this is a great and simple introduction.  For those who may need more of a challenge, multiple days could be combined.  Funny Bunny was able to combine four days into one.

Students define bolded vocabulary words, identify parts of speech, make grammar, punctuation, and spelling corrections, and copy the sentences once they are correct.  When they are finished they will have a cumulative story that they have written.

Included in the Student Book are also Grammar Cards and a very helpful Grammar Glossary.

My Thoughts:  We have been working quickly through The Nose Tree as most of it is a review for Funny Bunny.  We are currently on week 14.  I decided to start with book 1 because, even though most of it is a review for her, there are some new concepts introduced toward the end of the book that I wanted her to learn.  I've been really pleased with this book and would highly recommend it to others who are looking for a solid and cumulative grammar series.

Thoughts of an 11-Year Old:  Fix-It! Grammar is a grammar book that is full of short sentences. You correct the punctuation and label words in each sentence of the story. The story I'm working on now is about how three brothers were granted magical items. It's really quite interesting, and you learn something new every week, or rather, add something to a list of things you label and/or fix. It covers things like pronouns, adjectives, verbs, and who-which clauses. I like Fix-It! Grammar!

The Fallacy Detective Review

The Fallacy Detective, by Nathaniel and Hans Bluedorn, is a humorous, easy to read book for ages 12 and up, on how to identify errors in logic and reasoning, from a Christian worldview.

So what exactly is a fallacy?  According to the Merriam-Webster online dictionary, a fallacy is a wrong belief or a false or mistaken idea. A deceptive appearance.

“A cloud is 90% water. A watermelon is 90% water. Therefore, since a plane can fly through a cloud, a plane can fly through a watermelon.”

It is an important skill for our children to be able to discern the truth from a lie and to defend their point of view clearly.  And while some fallacies are easy to spot, many others are not.

The Fallacy Detective is divided up into 38 lessons.  Each lesson uses humor and real life situations to get the point across.  The cartoon illustrations and comic strips from Calvin and Hobbes, Dilbert, and more, make this book a great introduction to logic and reasoning and enjoyable for young readers.

The book is divided into the most common errors in reasoning into three sections: avoiding the question, making assumptions, and statistical fallacies, followed by propaganda techniques used by advertisers and politicians.

After each short lesson there is a series of questions pertaining to what the student just read.  It's recommended that the book is worked through in a group of two or more people, encouraging parents to learn along with their children.

In the back of the book there are instructions to play The Fallacy Detective Game, where students get to make their own fallacies.

According to the authors, when you complete this book, you should:

* Know how to spot bad reasoning
* Put a higher value on good reasoning
* Know how to avoid fallacies in your own reasoning

Thoughts of an 11-Year Old: The Fallacy Detective is a book about how to decipher bad logic and errors in reasoning. It helps you figure out things like propaganda to red herrings. If someone was trying to prove something like:

"They steal bases in baseball. If it's okay for baseball players to steal, logically, it's okay for me, 
too!"

what could you do to figure out if this is good logic? Should this statement be backed up or figured out? Is it really logical? What kind of tricks is the crook using to get his way? Is this a fallacy?

Roman Roads Media: Grammar of Poetry Review

That is the vision of Roman Roads Media.  If you are unaware of who they are, Roman Roads Media partners with master-teachers of classical education to offer high-quality curriculum for homeschoolers and classical schools.

We received the Grammar of Poetry to review.  The Grammar of Poetry is a video and textbook course that teaches the mechanics of poetry using the classical approach of imitation.
The Grammar of Poetry is designed for children in grades 6-9 and is versatile enough to use over the course of a year, semester, or an even shorter period.

The course includes 30 Lessons within 9 Modules, which cover a wide range of topics like simile, metaphor, meter, pun, hyperbole, and alliteration, and contain activities, riddles, and poetry reading.

We received the Student Text, Teacher's Edition, and the 4-disk DVD set to review.  The Student Text gives instruction at the beginning of each lesson and is a workbook for the child to write in.  The Teacher's Edition is exactly the same as the Student Text but it gives the answers and includes a Final Exam, as well as some scheduling and lesson instructions.

I also thought the four Appendices in the Teacher Edition were very helpful. Included is a Poetry Anthology, Glossary, section on How to Grade Poetry, and Notes to Homeschoolers.

So how did we use it?

At first I didn't use the DVD.  I read through the lesson out loud to Funny Bunny, we would work through a couple questions together and she would complete the workbook activities on her own.  I'd then go through with her and help her make any corrections.  This seemed to work really well for us as the lessons are all very easy to understand.

We did take a look at the DVD for one of the lessons, but since Funny Bunny was not having any trouble and didn't need clarification, we did not continue with it.

On the DVD, Matt Whitling explains each lesson, gives examples, and works through a couple of the questions.  Each lesson lasts about 10-20 minutes and his instruction would be great for a child who is an auditory learner or one who may be struggling with the lesson.  We found however, that we didn't need to watch the DVD and could complete each lesson with just the Student Text and Teacher's Edition.

My Thoughts:  I think the Grammar of Poetry is a great introduction to poetry for those students who would like to learn more about it.  As I said above, I don't think the DVD is an essential component, but some children may need the extra help it provides.

Thoughts of an 11-Year Old:  Grammar of Poetry {which is recommended for grades 6-9} was kind of like grammar in the form of poetry -  reading and labeling poetry rather then sentences. It was fairly easy for me, and I pretty much understood the concept right away. In my opinion, it was just a little boring, but I always had the exciting riddles at the end of each lesson to look forward to. {If you've seen or read The Hobbit, you'll understand my liking for riddles and we actually found a riddle from the movie in here!} Overall, it was not may favorite subject in summer school, but it certainly taught me a few things!

Analytical Grammar Review

Grammar.  It's what many children hate learning and many parents dread teaching.

Analytical Grammar is a no-nonsense, mastery approach to teaching grammar.  I heard about it many years ago, so I was excited to review it with Funny Bunny, who will soon be starting 6th grade.

We received Analytical Grammar and the Analytical Grammar Companion DVD Set.

This program is very different from what we have been using for the past several years, so here is how it works.

Analytical Grammar is designed for children in grades 6 and up.  If your child starts the program in 6th or 7th grade, it is designed as a three-year program, with a total of 34 units.

Year 1: Units 1-10 {with one reinforcement one day, every other week}
Year 2: Units 11-17 {with one reinforcement once a month}
Year 3: Units 18-34

It's mentioned that an older child may want to complete the program in less than three years. A sample of a shortened schedule is given in the teacher's book.  The 34 units could be done over two years or even one year by completing one unit a week.  That's the benefit of homeschooling, as the parent, you can determine the best fit for your child.

Each unit is broken down in the following format:

* Lesson Notes
* Exercise 1
* Exercise 2
* Exercise 3
* Skills Support {units 1-10}
* Test

I think it's great that they give the option to complete three different exercises for each unit.  Sometimes Funny Bunny needed the extra practice, and other times she knew the material and didn't want to complete another page.  And that was okay with me.  If the child scores at least an 80% on the test, they can skip to the next unit.

It's also recommended to make all exercises and tests "open notes."  This gets the student use to their books and helps them easily find information when they need it.  The student workbook pages are perforated so the lesson pages can be pulled out to create a grammar reference book for future use.

There are also notes on correcting the tests.  This was extremely helpful to me since I would not know where to start to correct her work.  I found that it was also an easy way for her to go back with me and fix the mistakes.

Lastly, the Companion DVD Set is very helpful.  We started the program without using the DVD but then when we hit a lesson that Funny Bunny needed some help on, I had her watch the DVD to review the lesson and it helped tremendously.  I will have her use the DVD to introduce the lesson for now on.

Overall, I think Analytical Grammar is a strong grammar program and I would recommend it.

Funny Bunny, however, found it very repetitive.  I would like to continue the program so hopefully her feelings will change over the next few units.

Institute for Excellence in Writing Review

I can't hide my excitement...we LOVE Institute for Excellence in Writing {IEW}!!  Funny Bunny and I were first introduced to IEW about two years ago and have been using their products ever since.  For this review we received the two products listed below.

Teaching Writing: Structure and Style DVD Seminar with Seminar Workbook {TWSS}

Student Writing Intensive {SWI} Level B

Funny Bunny has completed Student Writing Intensive Level A already so she was prepared for Level B.  I however, had never watched the Teaching Writing: Structure and Style {TWSS} DVD and was happy to finally get to watch it!

First, let me start by saying that Andrew Pudewa is the founder, principal speaker, and director of the Institute for Excellence in Writing.

Funny Bunny and I met him at the FPEA Homeschool Convention in Orlando in May.  He is the teacher on the DVDs and in my opinion, makes the whole program exciting to watch and fun to use!  Funny Bunny just loves listening to him.  And meeting him in person for Funny Bunny was kinda like meeting a rock star.  ;)  It was fun watching them interact!

Let me first tell you about Teaching Writing: Structure and Style {TWSS} DVD Seminar with Workbook.  I have heard so much about this dvd set and a question that many people ask is if it is *required* to purchase.  I'll tell you what I think in a bit, but first let me tell you what it's all about.

Teaching Writing: Structure and Style is a video seminar for parents and teachers.  It includes 10 DVDs.

The 9 units of TWSS are:

*  Unit 1:  Note Making and Key Word Outlines
*  Unit 2:  Summarizing from Notes
*  Unit 3:  Summarizing Narrative Stories
*  Unit 4:  Summarizing a Reference
*  Unit 5:  Writing from Pictures

*  Unit 8:  Essay Writing

Mr. Pudewa helps parents and teachers understand the program from beginning to end.  As I mentioned earlier, Funny Bunny has completed Student Writing Intensive Level A so I thought I knew all there was to know.  ;)  I watched all the DVDs right along with her, and she excelled through the program, but there were some things that I really didn't understand the WHY behind.  While watching TWSS there were many times that I was thinking, Ohhh, that is why she needs to do that!

Mr. Pudewa is very engaging and I did not feel at all bored or exhausted while watching the DVDs.  There are even several places where he asks for the DVD to be paused and work to be completed...by ME!!  Of course, looking back it all makes sense that to really be able to teach the program, you should be able to do it yourself.

So, should you purchase TWSS to be able to teach any of the Student Writing Intensive products?  Well, it is not required and I can honestly say that Funny Bunny did very well in SWI A without me previously watching TWSS, BUT if I had watched it and understood what I understand now, I think I could have been a more confident and helpful teacher.  So I would recommend Teaching Writing: Structure and Style 100%!!

So now that I've told you all about Teaching Writing: Structure and Style, let me tell you about Student Writing Intensive Level B.

Recorded live with Mr. Andrew Pudewa, this four-DVD writing course for students lays a solid foundation of writing skills, based on the Teaching Writing: Structure & Style syllabus. 

The three levels cover grades 3-12 and require no previous experience.

Let me just start this off by saying that Funny Bunny LOVES listening to Mr. Pudewa and is always entertained by his lessons.  I was initially concerned that this program was only for the struggling writer but she has learned so much!  She enjoys writing and I will often find her typing away on another chapter book that she has thought up overnight.  But Student Writing Intensive has taught her how to create an interesting story that the reader will enjoy and not want to put down.  Does she still have more to learn?  YES!  And that is why I was happy to review Student Writing Intensive Level B.

One thing I like is that everything is laid out for you.  Included is a Scope and Sequence and Suggested Course Schedule with each and every day mapped out.  Of course you don't have to follow it exactly, but it's there for those who need it.  In addition, each lesson includes Teacher's Notes that explain the lesson in detail, list reinforcement exercises, and sample outlines.  Click here to view a sample of SWI B.

For this review Funny Bunny was able to complete the first four lessons, which is roughly 7 weeks of work.  Below is one of her Key Word Outlines and a rough draft of her story.  He encourages messy papers and does not allow erasers, or even pencils....although she did this one with pencil.  {It's sometimes hard to find a pen around here}.

I'm glad for the messy paper encouragement because her paper definitely fits the bill!  He requires his students to use things like -ly adverbs, quality adjectives, strong verbs, who/which clauses, and to stay away from a list of banned words.  After writing the rough draft, Funny Bunny will edit it once more before typing it out.

Thoughts of a 10-Year Old:  I liked IEW because I LOVE to write and I liked Mr. Pudewa because he is funny and he is a good teacher.  I learned things like -ly words, good adjectives, strong verbs, and more.  IEW is fun for me because I like to write, but if I didn't like to write, this just might make me love writing!  I really love and recommend IEW.  Go and get this now!
