As families are finishing up their school year and planning for the next, there are many curriculum decisions to be made.  If you are like us, math is always one of them.  Do we stay with what we used this year or switch to something else?  What works for one child doesn't work for another.  Abacus or rods, textbook or online?  Decisions, decisions...

I was given a free copy of their 4th Grade Premium Edition homeschool math software on CD for Funny Bunny and I to try. 

Installing the software was a breeze and we quickly began the program.  Below is the screen the child will come to one they log on.

You have the option to take a quick tutorial and then you can get started.  If you click the picture to enlarge it, you can see there are several options across the top. Multimedia Lessons, Lesson Plan, Curriculum Book, Worksheets, Exams, Worksheets and Exams Solution Guide {which only the parent can access}, Help, and Progress Tracking.  It's all right there.  I have the Multimedia Lessons selected and you can see my options on the left.  There are 16 chapters.

Below is a sample of Lesson 1.2: Defining and Grouping Whole Numbers.  The student can either listen to the text being read aloud or they can turn off the audio and read the text themselves. 

After the lesson, they take a multiple choice interactive quiz.  If the parent feels they need to work more on a particular concept, they can assign additional worksheets and then an exam.  

My Thoughts:  I like the concept of having everything in one place.  I can have Funny Bunny sit at the computer for each lesson and have it read and explained to her.  She can even take the interactive quiz without my help.  I have the option to print the worksheets and exams and can print them as needed.  I also like the reporting feature.  I can track her progress and see where she needs more help.  On the other hand I did find the lessons a little dry and slow.  I wanted to listen to the lesson being read aloud but it seemed to drag on.  I was glad there was a feature to fast forward and to turn off the audio and just read it myself.  :)

Thoughts of a 9-Year Old:  I didn't like A+ TutorSoft Math as much as some other math programs. I think that the audio is a little school-y and one-toned and (in my opinion) the girl that does the audio sounds like she has a stuffy nose. All in all: Not that thrilling: Just OK.

WriteShop Review

W r i t i n g.  Do your kids either love it or hate it?  Over the past couple years I have reviewed {and Funny Bunny has tried} several writing programs.  Some have been wonderful and others have fallen short.  Are you finding the same thing in your home?  The program that works for one child doesn't work for another. 

Well I want to tell you about a very unique writing program called WriteShop.  WriteShop is an incremental writing program, written for kindergarten through high school children, and includes step-by-step lessons that present students with the building blocks of the writing process - pre-writing, brainstorming, writing, and revising - and help you edit and evaluate their work. 

WriteShop Primary includes:
Book A for Kindergarten or First Graders {ages 5-7}
Book B for First or Second Graders {ages 6-8}
Book C for Second or Third Graders {ages 7-9}

WriteShop Junior includes:
Book D for Third, Fourth, or Reluctant Fifth Graders {ages 8-10}  We received Book D Teacher's Guide, Activity Pack, and Time-Saver Pack.

In this book students learn to write and publish fiction, nonfiction, and poetry using a variety of pre-writing games, graphic organizers, and self-editing tools.

The Teacher's Manual includes 35 pages of instructions on understanding the purpose of WriteShop and how to use it.  They go through how to choose the correct level for your child, planning your schedule with multiple lesson plans to choose from, and listing all of the materials and supplies needed for each lesson of the program.

WriteShop Book D has 10 Lessons, which are then broken down into 8 Activities Sets consisting of one or more exercises.  No matter which lesson you are working on, the Activity Sets will always contain the same elements.  This is where the program is unique!  These Activities Sets are different than anything I have seen in other writing programs we have used.

Act Set 2: Lesson Overview, Pre-Writing Activity, Model and Teach
Act Set 3: Review, Skill Builder, and Journal Writing Practice
Act Set 4: Brainstorming

Act Set 8: Evaluating the Students Work

All of the Activity Sets are very hands-on and the Activity Pack includes everything the child will need to complete each one.

I love the idea of the Fold-N-Go Grammar Pack.  In each lesson the child not only learns about the different writing genres like Humor, Adventure, and Historical Fiction, but they are also learning about grammar {Nouns, Pronouns, Verbs, Punctuation, Capitalization, etc} with the Fold-N-Go Grammar Pack.  It is something that they create themselves, and can refer back to anytime they want.

I also like how each lesson has a particular focus and objective.  Everything is outlined for the parent.  Below you can see Lesson 5: Mystery. 

My Thoughts:  I have to admit that when I first started reading over the introduction and instructions, I was a little overwhelmed.  I had to read them several times and go through the Activity Pack as I read, before I understood the terminology and process.  Once I did though, I was excited to get started on it with Funny Bunny.

I think WriteShop would be a great fit for any child who enjoys hands-on activities, whether they are a reluctant writer or not.

miscellany monday

on saturday funny bunny had auditions at her dance studio for next year's company class.  she is in one of the company classes already but had to try out to either stay where she was or move up.  although she was nervous about the audition, she was happy to stay where she was.

~two~

it was announced late saturday evening who made the classes.  she ended up moving up!!!  she was already in bed when i heard the news so i didn't wake her.  i told her first thing sunday morning and was nervous about her reaction since she told me she didn't want to move up.  well, she has been on cloud nine ever since!!  i guess she thought she would not make the move up so she was not expecting it.  she is still giddy!!  below is one of her dance recital pictures.

last night she wanted her nails painted and picked the colors...this is what the result was. :)

today funny bunny woke up fine but then started complaining of upper leg pain.  not sure if she slept funny or pulled something, but it hurts her to move it.  there is no bruising and it doesn't hurt if I poke it, so i'm stumped.  she has been laying with it propped up for a few hours now and I gave her some advil for the pain.  hoping she just slept funny and it will go away soon.

5 Days of Homeschooling An Only Child

It's the last day of 5 Days of Blogging with the Homeschool Crew and after touching on schooling at home, socialization, and fitting in, today I'm writing about Homeschooling An Only Child and just plain having fun.

As Funny Bunny has grown, her academic workload has grown right along with her.  It is sometimes hard to find that balance between schoolwork and extra curricular activities. 

She is also an intelligent and very talented child with natural abilities in many areas {she gets none of those from me}.  ;)  As parents of an only child, I think we tend to push her more than we would if we had many children. 

But I think it is important to remember that homeschooling should be more than just being your child's teacher for math, grammar, and science.  It should be about going outside, exploring, spending quality time together, and just plain having fun!

No family is perfect, and I know we have made our share of mistakes, but I hope that when Funny Bunny looks back, she smiles when she remembers the field trips she took, friends she made, activities she participated in, stories we read together, and projects we worked on. 

Homeschooling an only child doesn't have to be that different than homeschooling several children.  We are all making memories that will hopefully last a lifetime!

 

5 Days of Homeschooling An Only Child

It's day four of 5 Days of Blogging with the Homeschool Crew and today I'm writing about Homeschooling An Only Child and fitting in.

Funny Bunny has always been very social and has made friends easily.  And I've always made sure that we participate in plenty of activities outside the home.  Did you read my last post about socialization? ;)

As Funny Bunny and her friends over the years have gotten older though, I have noticed something.  Just as I would seek out another family with a girl around her age for her to play with, families with many children are doing the same thing.  They are looking for other families with children around the ages of their children.  And we just have one girl...no older or younger siblings to play with theirs.

Of course this isn't really a big deal, and it's certainly not something that Funny Bunny notices, just something that I've noticed over the past couple years.

So what do I do?  The same thing I always do...attend as many activities as we can and just let her have fun.  :)

5 Days of Homeschooling An Only Child

It's day three of 5 Days of Blogging with the Homeschool Crew and today I'm writing about Homeschooling An Only Child and socialization.

It may be hard for some to believe that homeschooled children can be "socialized".  And what about the "only child" who is homeschooled? 

so· cial· i· za· tion: a continuing process whereby an individual acquires a personal identity and learns the norms, values, behavior, and social skills appropriate to his or her social position. 

I find the definition kind of funny.  What is a 6-year old's social position anyways?  Is a homeschooled 6-yr old that much different from a 6-yr old who attends school?  Are their norms, values, behavior, and social skills that much different?

Well, I know that when people ask, "What about socialization", they are really asking if Funny Bunny gets out of the house to play with other children.  So I thought it would be fun to list her activities...since she was 2.

Starting when Funny Bunny was a toddler, I took her to our library's story time.  She attended several classes a week...it was like our second home.  ;)  We also joined a playgroup and she attended Kindermusic classes for a while.

When she was just shy of three years old, we joined a homeschool group.  I still didn't know at the time if homeschooling was what we wanted to do, but thought it couldn't hurt to at least check it out.

When she turned three she began a ballet/tap class and weekly Community Bible Study classes {both of which she still does now}.  At four she started soccer and it was her first time attending Vacation Bible School at church.  At six she joined the summer swim team at the YMCA. 

As she got older she attended the local zoo's homeschool classes, I enrolled her into Classical Conversations for two years, we had co-op classes here and there, and I can't count the number of field trips, park days, and play dates she has been on.

This year alone she takes four dance classes a week, one piano class, she's in an American Girl Book Club, Jr Homemaker's Club, Art Club, and Community Bible Study...just to name a few. 

So can an "only child" who is homeschooled get the socialization that they need?  I think so!

If you are considering homeschooling your only child, I hope you will not let worrying about socialization affect your decision.  There are so many ways to get involved with homeschool groups and organizations.  

Go Science Video Review

If you have never visited Library & Educational Services you just have to!  LES is a wholesale supplier of wholesome educational materials, which serves educators, librarians, and church leaders of children's ministries. 

If you are new to LES, you simply register for an account {for free} so you can shop on their site.  It is well worth it because you can save anywhere from 30% to 70%!  

I have been buying from LES for several years and am pleased to tell you about a creation based series of DVDs they offer called Go Science.

There are six volumes all together and I was excited to receive and review Volume 1: Motion and Volume 2: Simple Machines, Sound, and Weather.

Volume 1 has demonstrations that include things like a ring and chain, gyroscope, and egg spin.  This particular video runs for almost 30 minutes so it was easy for Funny Bunny and I to watch it in one sitting.  The experiments and explanations were simple enough to understand and do at home, and the theme of motion and the laws of gravity and motion were repeated throughout, so it helped with retention.

Volume 2 has demonstrations that include levers, planes, pulleys, singing rods, making a cloud, and more.  This video runs almost an hour so we divided our watching time into a few sittings.  Some of these experiments were a little harder to reproduce due to not having the materials on hand.

My Thoughts:  Overall I thought the videos were good.  They are recommended for ages 6 to 14, but I thought they would work best for the younger end of that range.  Ben does a good job of engaging the children on the video and explaining the experiments.  It is also nice that at the end of each demonstration, he points to God.  "Every time we learn something about SCIENCE, we learn something about our CREATOR GOD!"

Thoughts of a 9-Year Old:  I like Go Science Volume 1 and it's experiments.  I especially liked the gyroscope, inertia, and Newtonian cradle a lot.  The Newtonian cradle is a stand with five balls. The number of balls you swing one way should be the same amount that swing in the opposite direction.  But when you swing three, since there's five, you might think only two swing opposite...?  But no, one comes off one end to make three on the other side!

I also liked the egg spin.  It showed how to tell a hard-broiled egg from a regular egg.  One spins fast and one spins slow.
