Write with WORLD Review

Photobucket

I'm always on the lookout for writing curriculum.  Funny Bunny loves to write stories and anything that I can find to help and inspire her, is as good as gold to me!

Write with WORLD may be just that.  It is a new middle school Christian writing curriculum from the publishers of God's World News and WORLD Magazine.  The curriculum is loosely connected to both publications and occasionally news stories or published essays are used as subject matter.

It aims to produce young writers who love writing, can write effectively, and intelligently share ideas, beliefs, and their worldview.

The Student Book starts with a brief introduction, which I think, will get the student excited.  Below is an excerpt.

"In this writing program, real, professional writers will be sharing what they have to say with you.  In each lesson, a writer from WORLD Magazine or God's World News will share tips on how they read, think, or write.  As the year progresses, these writers may even read some of your writing.  A few of you will even have your writing published online** or in one of the magazine.  From the very first lesson, we're going to treat you like real writers."

** There will be another website coming in September for users of the curriculum.  The site will provide an online publishing opportunity for the student writers, as well as additional writing subject to constantly freshen and augment what is in the textbook.

How can you not get excited about that?

The book is comprised of four units, each unit consisting of four lessons, and the lessons are broken down into five capsules of reading and assignments.  Younger students could complete one capsule a day while older students could complete several.  Here you can see a sample of Unit 1/Lesson 1 and here you can see a full Table of Contents.

Students will be involved in:
  • reading and critical thinking
  • contemporary subjects and professional guidance to pique interest
  • flexible exercises to build confidence and skill for using today's new media
  • a thoughtful and meaningful Christian worldview

My Thoughts:  I really like the simple flow of the book.  It gives the student the ability to complete as much or as little at a time as they would like.  I also like that it is a Christian curriculum and it is different from any other writing program I have seen.  Since it is a middle school program, I only worked with Funny Bunny a little on it.  She did complete a few of the Capsules in the first lesson, and I was surprised to find that it was easy enough for her to do with my help.

Find Out More:  You can find out more online at Write with WORLD.  Write with WORLD Full Curriculum for either Year 1 {which we received} or Year 2 is $95.  It includes one Teacher Textbook with Online Access {coming the Fall} and one Student Textbook.  Both the Year 1 and Year 2 Full Curriculum is $165 if bought together.

My Crewmates are also reviewing , Write with WORLD so you can check out what they think HERE.

The 5 Love Languages of Children Review and Giveaway

Two weeks ago I reviewed {and hosted a giveaway for} an adorable children's book based on Dr. Gary Chapman's The Five Love Languages called A Perfect Pet for Peyton.

Today I am happy to tell you about the companion to that children's book {for adults}, The 5 Love Languages of Children.

To be their best, children need to feel loved. But if you and your child speak different love languages, your affection might get lost in translation, affecting the child’s attitude, behavior, and development.

Dr. Gary Chapman’s groundbreaking Five Love Languages series has helped millions of couples communicate love more clearly, and Dr. Ross Campbell M.D. has applied the innovative system to children as well. The 5 Love Languages of Children gives practical suggestions for learning how your children interpret love and creating a sense of security in which they can thrive.

The Love Languages that you will learn about in detail are Physical Touch, Words of Affirmation, Gifts, Acts of Service, and Quality Time.  And even if you have read Gary's first book, The 5 Love Languages, it was wonderful to learn how to better understand and bond with our children using the same simple techniques.

I'm a homeschool mom and pretty much around Funny Bunny 24/7.  I feel like I have her figured out but I know there are always ways that we as parents can improve our relationships with our children.

After reading the book, I went back and forth on FB's Love Language.  Nothing was really standing out but I was leaning towards Quality TimeShe took the test in the back of the book and did lean towards Quality Time, with Physical Touch and Words of Affirmation not far behind.  That's not too much of a surprise for a girl who needs hugs every 5 minutes.  ;)

Find Out More: You can find out more about The 5 Love Languages of Children online at The Five Love LanguagesThe book is available online at a number of retailers, which you can find at the previous link.

TruthQuest History Review

PhotobucketTruthQuest History is a deep and rich literature-based history study…but with a difference. You will not learn the story of mankind; you will learn the love story of mankind. You will not focus on the rise and fall of human civilizations; you will focus on the arrow-straight line of God's unchanging existence, power, love, truth, and plan for civilization. You will not simply 'meet the culture' or 'get the facts;' you will probe the truths of history so deeply that your students will be equipped to change their world!  Why? Because mankind is not the prime force in the universe ...God is.

PhotobucketTruthQuest History is made up of 11 guides, encompassing two levels.  Level I includes three volumes of American History for Young Students, written for grades 1-5.  In these three guides the commentary is gentler, the issues lighter, the lessons more positive.

Volume I covers Exploration-1800, Volume II covers 1800-1865, and Volume III, which I received, covers 1865-2000.

The main TruthQuest History series (Level II) includes eight guides which begin with Creation/Ancient History and fully cover European and American history to just after the year 2000, are designed for Grades 5-12.  These guides will take you deeper and the depth of commentary and topics increasingly advances as the series progresses.

You can read more about all 11 guides here, and also find answers to placement questions and long range planning ideas.

So how do you use TruthQuest History?  Unlike some guides you will find, TruthQuest History does not tell you what to do each day.  You just work your way through the guides at your own pace, scheduling as you like, using what you want and omitting what you don't.  It's also designed to have all children in a family learning together as much as possible.

TruthQuest History guides have four parts
*  Commentary that introduces every topic
*  Individual reading lists organized by grade level for each topic
*  ThinkWrite exercises to help students explain key truths
*  An appendix that has sample answers to the ThinkWrite exercises, a list of cited resources, and a very large list of books.

So how did we use TruthQuest History?

First I read the commentary aloud to Funny Bunny. We skipped to the second topic in the guide {just because we can start where ever we like} and read about Westward Expansion.  Following the topic was a very large list of resources (5 1/2 pages of books and activities to be exact).  But the great thing about this curriculum is that we can pick and choose what we like.  So Funny Bunny and I looked through the list and picked out a few things to read.  Some we had on hand and some we had to go to the library to check out.  And even though we could never possibly get to every book in the list, I love having a large list at my fingertips of great books...who wouldn't?!!

My Thoughts:  We received American History for Young Students Volume III, which covers the time period of 1865-2000.  I really like the way that the guide is set up and enjoyed the relaxed nature of it.  I also liked very much the focus on God and spiritual truths throughout the guide.  My only worry in using this curriculum is getting behind or off track.  I like a schedule.  I like to have my books scheduled out for me.  I like to be told to read pages 5-10 of a particular book.  So in the long run, I'm not sure how this would work for us.  I do think it is an absolutely wonderful guide, and great for families with many children.

Find Out More:  You can find out more online at TruthQuest History.  American History for Young Students Volume III is $29.95.  Printed guides sell for between $24.95 and $34.95.  All books are also available as PDF for slightly less.  Companion Resources for each volume can also be purchased.  You can see all products, along with samples of each, here.

My Crewmates are also reviewing TruthQuest History, so you can check out what they think HERE.

Funny Bunny Designs

I had mentioned a few weeks ago that Funny Bunny has been hard at work on a project since December.  Well I finally think it's time to share it!!

Funny Bunny Designs is an online store where you can purchase things like t-shirts, hats, pins, placemats, keychains, mugs, and more....all designed with images that Funny Bunny created herself.

She drew each design and chose the products to feature them on.  Everything can be customized, so if you love the design but don't like the shirt style, you can change it.

And the best part is that a small percentage of every sale goes to Funny Bunny!!

I'm also happy to announce that she made her first sale {the llama shirt below} two weeks ago!

So if you have some time, please stop by Funny Bunny Designs and take a look.  Once on her page, you can click to "like" her store on the left side.  That would mean a lot!

The Worldwide Dessert Contest Review and Giveaway

Have you heard of the book The Worldwide Dessert Contest?  If you have, I can't wait to tell you about the new Enhanced Multimedia Edition.  If you haven't, well...you're in for a treat!!

A little bit of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory with a dash of Homer Price's donut maker, this novel pays homage to the longstanding rapport between children and sweets. John Applefeller longs to win the Worldwide Dessert Contest, but all his delicious desserts have a penchant for changing into something else at the last minute. The way he overcomes this difficulty and takes first place involves a search for the greatest chef in the world, the defeat of the thieving title-holder of the contest and a run-in with a judge who has, thanks to John, a caramel apple bonded to his cheek from their last encounter.

Dan Elish published the children's story in 1988 and then in 1993 it was performed on stage as a musical.  Fast forward to 2011, The Worldwide Dessert Contest is now available as an interactive ebook, with links throughout to the songs!

This book has had Funny Bunny and I in stitches with laughter!!  I love Dan's writing style and how he makes the characters just come alive on the page.

There is John Applefeller, the main character, who loves apple desserts and has wanted to win the Silver Spoon in the Worldwide Dessert Contest more than anyone.  But he has finished in last place all ten years he has entered because his desserts change into something else at the last minute.

Other contestants include Reginald Coco, Princess Irma A. Frostina, and Michel Deserts, all with varied specialities.  Sylvester S. Sweet, has been the winner of ten consecutive Silver Spoons, with his double-chocolate-fudge-raspberry-coconut-lime swirl.  Sounds shifty to me!

Then there are the judges.  Brewster McLaughlin, Hamilton Crusthardy, George Saucery, and Nathaniel Barkle, the head judge, with a large brown caramel apple, it's white stick pointing toward the sky, permanently stuck to his cheek, caused by one of Applefeller's changing desserts.

My Thoughts:  This is a great read aloud for children of all ages!  Funny Bunny and I enjoyed learning about all the characters and their silly attributes.  I think this book would make for a great audio as well.  We couldn't wait to listen to each of the songs...they make this book even more fun and unique.

Thought of an 8-Year Old:  Silly and hilarious, Applefeller's desperate wanting of the Silver Spoon makes him even more determined to make this year the year he wins it. Judge Barkle is first up. "Delicious!" he declares. But after the fifth bite, the apple pancake is becoming rubbery in Barkle's mouth. What could Applefeller's dessert be turning into this time?

I like The Worldwide Dessert Contest because it has silly songs, hilarious characters and funny little lines. This is a "read another chapter, Mommy!" kind of book. We couldn't wait to see what came next! I really like it.

Find Out More:  You can find out more online on Amazon at The Worldwide Dessert Contest.  The purchase price is $9.99 and it can be experienced via anything with an Internet connection, including an iPad, phone, tablet, laptop or desktop computer.  You are also able to view a sample of the book and listen to a few songs.  You can also read more about it here.
