Supercharged Science Review

 photo science_zps3636642f.jpg

Confession time:  When we do science...I skip most of the experiments!!  I know I shouldn't, but I do.

And the times I do gather all of the supplies, we usually end up doing a 30-second experiment that doesn't work like it should.  Does this happen to you?  Please tell me I'm not the only one!

 photo escience-full-600px_zps738b5d59.jpgSo I was willing to try something new.  A product where someone else does all the experiments for me...right in my home!  I found it and it's called Supercharged Science!

Supercharged Science offers an e-Science Online Learning Program.  This is like no other science program we have done.  And  I want to make it crystal clear that Funny Bunny is LOVING it!!  I cannot be happier!  I have never seen her react this way to science.  And I'm not talking about plants and animals.  She's learned about Force, Gravity, and Friction...and was excited about it!

Here is how it works:

Step 1: Watch the Getting Started Video.
Step 2: Pick the topic you want to start with.
Step 3: Watch the videos and dive right into the activities.
Step 4: Download the Conversion Charts to help coordinate with another science program if you have one.
Step 5: Get help when you need it through email.

The e-Science Learning Program is a complete K-12 hands-on science curriculumIt incorporates over 1,000 videos that guide kids step-by-step through hands-on activities, projects, and experiments.

Aurora and her husband Al started about 10 years ago with the ambition of improving the way kids learn science.  They both knew from experience that when kids are genuinely excited about a subject, teaching it is easy.

Aurora, by the way, is a real rocket scientist who has worked for NASA, designed rockets, and has 3 patents for her inventions!  How cool is that?!

During the first month you will get access to the first 7 units, plus additional sections like “The Scientific Method”.  If there is a later unit that you want to access early, you can email and they will approve it immediately.  This way, if someone is working on a certain topic, they are never made to wait months to have access to it.  The each month you will get access to the next 2 units in order {60-80 experiments}.

Here is how we used it:

We started with Unit 1: Mechanics {Force, Gravity, and Friction}.  I was tempted to start with something that Funny Bunny is more familiar with, like Biology, but I wanted to try something new.  Each lesson contains:

*  Lesson Highlights
*  An Introduction with a Video
*  Reading
*  Experiments and Videos
*  Exercises

We read the Highlights together and watched the Introduction Video.  Aurora then gives the option to continue to the Reading section to learn more about the topic or dive right into the Experiments and Videos, which is what we did.

Aurora is a great teacher and I love how excited and she gets in her videos!  You can tell she is passionate about Science!

Below you can see a couple of Funny Bunny's experiments.  We actually did many others but I didn't get any pictures.

Force: Flying Paper Clip

Force: Building Bridges

I thought one of the neatest experiments was one on Gravity.  If you pitch a ball toward the sunset at the same instant you drop another from your other hand, which one reaches the ground first?  What if a bullet is fired parallel to the ground from a gun and a bullet dropped from the same height at the same time?  Will both hit the ground at the same time?  What do you think will happen?  We were pretty surprised by what we found!

Thoughts of a 9-Year Old:  The experiments were cool {especially the hovercraft} and were fun to do.

Find Out More:  You can find out more online at Supercharged Science.  The e-Science Online Learning Program is $37/mo for the K-8 Level Plan and $57/mo for the K-12 Level Plan.  You can cancel anytime.  Go to the Membership FAQs for any questions you may have.  Check out this page for Homeschool Parents and this one for Teachers and Educators.  If you'd like to try it out first, sign up for their FREE Samples!

Wordless Wednesday: Living Wax Museum

Last night Funny Bunny was Helen Keller in our local Homeschool Living Wax Museum.  In this picture she is "frozen" waiting for someone to bring her to life by pushing the button on her hand.

Salem Ridge Press: Hilda The Briton Review

Salem Ridge Press Logo photo salemridgelogo_zpsf36e1a99.gif

Salem Ridge Press is a publishing company, established in 2005 by a homeschooling family, dedicated to bringing back quality children's books of the 1800's and early 1900's for a new generation of readers.

They have about 30 books to choose from and we were fortunate enough to receive Hilda The Briton Or, The Golden Age {The Story of a Roman Slave Girl} by Emma Leslie.

Before I tell you how much we LOVED this book, let me tell you a little more about Salem Ridge Press.  These aren't just any kind of books, these are wholesome books for the entire family that teach godly character and high moral values.  Books that you aren't going to find at your local book store.

Their book selection is organized in the following categories so it is easy to find what you want.

*  Alphabetically
*  By Time Period and Location
*  Author
*  Age Range
*  Historical Fiction {Church, American, and World History}
*  Adventure
*  Allegory
*  Young Readers

I personally like that they have it divided up by time period and location because it makes it easy to find a book to go along with our history studies.

Hilda the Briton photo sr-hildathebriton_zps6715dd03.jpg Hilda The Briton tells the story of a young girl named Hilda and her brother Bran, who are taken from Britain to be sold as slaves in Ancient Rome, 63 A.D.  One day Hilda hears the teachings of a prisoner named Paul and learns about a God different from the gods she and her brother were worshiping.  As she spreads this message to others, what happens is amazing!!

Emma Leslie, whose actual name was Emma Dixon, was a prolific Victorian children's author who wrote over 100 books.  Emma Leslie brought a strong Christian emphasis into her writing and many of her books were originally published by the Religious Tract Society.

My Thoughts:  We could not get enough of this book and it was hard to put it down!  It showed  how God can work through even a young slave girl to change the hearts of many.  Here you can read the First Chapter.

I'm already making a list of books that we would like to get to go along with our history for next year!

Thoughts of a 9-Year Old:  Hilda the Briton was a very exciting story.  I enjoyed my mom reading it to me.  Every chapter was filled with suspense:  Will Hilda get in trouble because of what she did?  Will the two get their freedom?  Will Bran get sold?  Every time a chapter ended I begged to read more.  In my opinion, it was a REALLY-REALLY-REALLY great book!  It is one of my favorite books this year!!

Find Out More:  You can find out more online at Salem Ridge PressHilda the Briton is $12.95 for softcover and $22.95 for hardcover.  It is part of their Junior Church History Series and great for both boys and girls, ages 8-adult.

My Crewmates are also reviewing Salem Ridge Press, so you can check out what they think HERE.

A Journey Through Learning Lapbooks Review

Journey through Learning Logo photo journeythroughlearninglogo_zps21c38856.jpg

A Journey Through Learning Lapbooks provides Educational and Professional quality lapbooks for all subjects and ages.  It has been several years since Funny Bunny completed a lapbook, so I was interested to see if she would still enjoy it.

Knights and Castles photo knightsandcastles_zps3e1f0ab1.jpeg They have hundreds of lapbooks to choose from and we were lucky to receive Knights and Castles, which goes along with the time period we are studying, so it was perfect!!

Written from a Christian perspective, this lapbook starts with the fall of Rome, leads into the Middle Ages and then the real fun begins when learning all about knights, castles, heraldry, serfs, peasants, and much more.

We have really enjoyed working on this lapbook for the past few weeks, especially Funny Bunny!  Not only has she learned a ton about knights and castles, it went right along with what we were already doing.  She is already asking when we are going to do the next one!!

They have stand-alone lapbooks and also lapbooks that go along with specific homeschooling programs. Their lapbooks can be printed on white or colored paper.

If you have never created a lapbook before, no problem.  The first few pages of each lapbook guides you through the simple process.  They include instructions on how to assemble the base and give examples of different paper folds.  Supplies for our lapbook included:

*  Lapbook Pages
*  3 Colored File Folders
*  Scissors
*  Glue
*  Stapler
*  Brads or Stapler
*  Hole Puncher {although I can't remember needing this}

One of the best things about A Journey Through Learning Lapbooks is that you really do not need any other resources.  Before each lapbooking activity there is a brief summary of the topic.  I would read that to Funny Bunny as she was cutting and then she would complete the piece before gluing it in.

Thoughts of a 9-Year Old:  I LOVED IT!!!  It was fun.  Mommy and I had a good time.  I would like to have another lapbook soon.  This was a good lapbook topic too.  I really liked this wonderful lapbooking experience.

Find Out More:  You can find out more online at A Journey Through Learning Lapbooks. Knights and Castles is for grades 2-7 and just $13 for an instant download, $14 for a CD, or $21 printed.  We received the instant download and printed as we needed.  Here you can see some sample pages.  Other members of The Crew received The Earth, Astronomy and Space, and Letters, Numbers, and Shapes

My Crewmates are also reviewing A Journey Through Leaning Lapbooks, so you can check out what they think HERE.
