ARTistic Pursuits Review

Photobucket

Art is sometimes one of those subjects that gets pushed to the back burner.  I have to make a real effort to include it into our weekly schedule.  ARTistic Pursuits makes that so much easier with their art curriculum!

Their art program not only teaches children how to draw, paint, and sculpt, but it includes art history and appreciation into it's lessons.  We received ARTistic Pursuits, Elementary 4-5 Book 2 to review.

Photobucket Elementary 4-5 Book 2 is for ages 9 and up and is perfect for fourth and fifth graders.  Each book in the series follows a similar format.  For instance, each unit in our book includes:

Lesson 1: Vocab and Creative Exercise
Lesson 2: Art Appreciation & History
Lesson 3: Techniques
Lesson 4: Application

Book 1 in the Elementary series focuses on the Elements of Art and Composition whereas Book 2's focus is Color and Composition.

Before the lessons begin, there are a couple of pages that go into detail about the color wheel, variations of color, and definitions.  I thought these were very helpful.

Each lesson then starts with the vocabulary and creative exercise.  I think Funny Bunny enjoyed the creative exercises the most.  In Lesson 1 of Unit 3, she was asked to choose a description of a dramatic or interesting scene from a book she is reading.  She was finishing up The Black Stallion and below was her picture.

There is a small list of supplies required, and one of the items we didn't have, so we purchased our first watercolor pencil set.  Lesson 3 of Unit 1 gives detail on how to use watercolor pencils and both Funny Bunny and I were eager to try them out!!  They were a little tricky at first but after a couple paintings, she got the hang of it...and now I think she prefers them over watercolor paints.  Below is a sample of her first watercolor pencil painting of a cupcake.

After some more practicing she was able to blend a little better.  Below you can see her Hobbit Hole.

I also took a stab at it, and if you ignore the shape of my fruit, you can see I was practicing hard and soft edges.  She is really not wanting to press hard with the pencil so it is something she will continue to work on.

ARTistic Pursuits is available for preschool through high school.

* Preschool:  Art assignments designed for preschool exploration

* Grades K-3:  Children are introduced to the visual arts and view art through history

* Grades 4-6, 7-8, 9-12:  Students learn technical skills while creating original works of art. Book One at each level provides an overview of drawing, covering the elements of art and composition. Book Two at each level provides an overview of color theory and composition.

Thoughts of a 9-Year Old:  I like ARTistic Pursuits and enjoy it because it didn't tell me how to paint.  This may sound strange, but it teaches you what you need to know, shows you an example, and then you do it.  No step-by-step instructions, and I like that because I don't like being told how to paint and how not to.  Anyway, I like it a lot better than some other art programs we've tried.  Overall, this is a really great thing!

Find Out More:  You can find out more about ARTistic Pursuits online.  There are ten books in all and each level sells for $47.95.  Here you can see a few samples.  You can also purchase Art Supply Packs to go along with the books.

Artistic Pursuits can also be used in the classroom.  You can find more information, as well as a Scope and Sequence, here.

My Crewmates are also reviewing ARTistic Pursuits, so you can check out what they think HERE.

Homeschooling - Can You Afford It?

I've been researching curriculum for Funny Bunny's 5th grade year for the past few week now.  I've spent hours trying to decide what to use and even more time budgeting it all.

If you are finding yourself doing the same thing, here are some tips to keep in mind to save money while homeschooling:

Set a Budget!  Have an idea of how much you want to spend each year and stick to it.  It can be really tempting to buy everything you see when you walk into a used curriculum sale.  Research ahead of time the prices for each item.  Write it down and bring it with you.  Just because all the other moms are equipped with roll carts and bags, doesn't mean you have to be.  Relax and look for what you need.

Make a Spreadsheet!  I started one when our daughter was in Pre-K.  I keep track of the item's retail price, how much I pay for it, and how much I sell it for.

Borrow or Swap!  If you know someone who has what you need but they are not using it this year, see if you can borrow it or swap it for something you have for the year.

Use the Library!  If you have a well stocked public library nearby, this is a cheap way to find all those books on your reading list.  Take advantage of their interlibrary loan system.

Buy used!  Buy from friends or shop your local used curriculum sale if you have one.  In the past I have had good luck with the Homeschool Classifieds.  It was pretty simple to set up an account and look for what I wanted.  I was able to buy and sell a few things, which worked out great!

Shop Sales!  Buy school supplies when everything is on sale, and during the tax-free weekend if your state offers it.

Shop Online!  I have found that if I can't find something used, I may be able to find it cheaper on Amazon or Books-A-Million.  Both offer free shipping if you buy over $25 and Books-A-Million has a 20% off educators discount for teachers.  You just have to sign up for the card and then register the card number to your account.

Join a Co-op!  Co-ops offer support and ideas that you would not have available otherwise.  If there is not a co-op near you, you could join the Homeschool Buyers Co-op, the world's largest purchasing cooperative for homeschoolers.

Hand Down!  We only have one child so we sell things after we use them, unless they would be a good resource for the future or they were consumable.  But for bigger families, hand down books and curriculum to younger siblings.

Search FREE Sites!  If I can find a free online site that has games, resources, or materials, I will try and incorporate it into our schedule.  I try not to use too many, but they break up our day for time to time.  Here are a few that I like:

Art Projects For Kids - Free art projects for children
Donna Young - Free printables and resources
Starfall - Free service to motivate children to read with phonics
Learning Games for Kids - Free online educational games
Lapbook Lessons - Free Lapbooks and Lapbook Video Lessons
Homeschool Share - Free literature-based unit studies
Timez Attack - Free online math game
Classics for Kids - Wonderful interactive site about the classics
Spelling City -  Free Vocabulary and Spelling Tests and Games
Big IQ Kids Spelling - Free online spelling tests
Currclick - Sign up for their weekly freebie
The Old Schoolhouse - Sign up for their weekly newsletter and get their free digital magazine

I hope this has been helpful!  There really are ways to stay within your budget so you can homeschool!  If you have any favorite and FREE resources that I haven't listed, let me know!

Unglued Devotional by Lysa Terkeurst

Unglued Devotional: 60 Days of Imperfect Progress.  I like that - Imperfect Progress.

This companion devotional to the bestselling book Unglued provides encouragement to help readers handle emotional struggles. Including a daily opening Scripture, Thought for the Day, devotion, and closing prayer, this book helps readers begin a 60-day journey in learning to positively process raw emotions, such as fear, anger, and regret.

Lysa takes you through each day with a thought and a Bible verse.

Day 6:

Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.  Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is - his good, pleasing and perfect will.  (Romans 12:2)

Thought for the Day: How we react is a crucial gauge of what's really going on inside us.

Lysa then tells a short story about something that has happened in her life, someone else's life, or just gives encouragement that relates to the verse and thought.  She ends each day with a prayer.  She is honest and encouraging.

I think most of us, if not all of us, could relate to these daily reminders.  For those who need a simple book to get you into the Word and prayer, I think this is a great devotional!

Find Out More:  You can find out more online at Zondervan.  Unglued Devotional is available as a softcover book for just $12.99.

Boasting

This is what the Lord says: “Let not the wise boast of their wisdom or the strong boast of their strength or the rich boast of their riches, but let the one who boasts boast about this: that they have the understanding to know me, that I am the Lord, who exercises kindness, justice and righteousness on earth, for in these I delight,” declares the Lord. ~ Jeremiah 9: 23-24

Menu Plan Monday - March 4

I have exciting news...last week I was able to attend a Green Smoothie Girl class with a good friend of mine.  Robyn Openshaw is the creator of Green Smoothie Girl and her talk was motivating and story inspirational!  I am so excited to add a green smoothie into my meal planning!!

For now I'm keeping breakfasts and dinners the same and substituting a green smoothie for my lunches.  Lunches are the hardest meal for me, especially if I don't have leftovers from the night before.  I tend to snack and as the day goes on, I get more hungry and will reach for things I shouldn't.  I haven't made a green smoothie yet, so I'm hoping my blender will cooperate!

Breakfasts
Handful of Shredded Wheat, Old Fashioned Oatmeal, Grape Nuts, raisins, sprinkle of cinnamon, and whatever fruit we have.  I also add almond milk.

Lunches
Green Smoothie

Dinners
Slow Cooker Vegetarian Chili
Giant Fruit and Vegetable Salad
Spaghetti with Marinara Sauce
Vegetable {no cheese on my side} Pizza with this Pizza Crust
Ridiculously Easy Vegetable Gumbo
Black Bean, Sweet Potato, and Quinoa Soup

If you have any easy plant-based recipes I would love to hear them!  I've been pinning several on Pinterest so I'm looking forward to trying some new meals in the next few weeks!

Abraham's Journey Book Review

Photobucket

Funny Bunny and I had the opportunity to to read Abraham's Journey: A Celebration of the American Dream by Robert and Kathleen Basmadjian from Inspiring the Dream.

PhotobucketAbraham's Journey is about a boy who is told by his parents that because of their recent job losses, they won't be able to purchase any gifts for Christmas.  He is saddened by the news but determined to find a way to save Christmas.

Thinking he can earn enough money to buy gifts for everyone, he begins texting his friends.  Something strange happens with his phone and he is suddenly transported into a cyber world, where he meets several great American men and women.  He learns that through talent, hard work, and perseverance, he could achieve the American Dream.  And most importantly, share it with others.

My Thoughts:  I think the premise that hard work and perseverance will be rewarded is a good one and I especially liked the fact that Abraham used the extra money he made to help those less fortunate.

Abraham met, listened to, and learned from several great American men and women from the past and present.  With their help he was able to succeed.  I think that there are so many great Americans that children can research and learn from and it was nice to see that those are the people who helped him, and not the friends he was about to text.

I don't think I would have selected all of the same people the author's chose to include in the book, but there are so many to choose from, it would be hard to narrow it down.

The last two pages of the book give a Definition of Terms and Character Biographies, which is a great place for children to learn more about any terms or people they didn't recognize.  That was helpful because I know there were at least three people that Funny Bunny didn't know.

Thoughts of a 9-Year Old:  I like Abraham's Journey because Abraham learns his true talents by exploring  a virtual world full of fun and adventure.  Abraham's parents have lost their job, and money is tight - and Christmas is just weeks away!  Worst of all, they don't have enough money to buy presents this year!  Determined to buy presents for his family, Abraham is about to text his friends, looking for odd jobs, when a wise old man who is also named Abraham takes him into the virtual world of the Internet.  Abraham finds his talents and uses them to help not only his family but others in need.  I liked this book a lot and enjoyed it immensely.

Find Out More:  You can find out more online at Inspiring the Dream.  Abraham's Journey is available an a soft cover book for just $14.99. It is recommended for ages 7-12.

My Crewmates are also talking about Abraham's Journey and you can check out what they think about it HERE.

Homeschool Mother's Journal 3-1-13

In my life this week…

I had the opportunity to take a Green Smoothie Girl class with a good friend.  Before we signed up for the class, which was free, I had never heard of Green Smoothie Girl.  Well, I am so glad I went!  Her talk was motivating and her story was inspirational!  I immediately went home and signed up for her newsletter and am ready to get some produce to make my own green smoothies!  If you are a regular reader of my blog you know that I have been trying to live a plant-based lifestyle.  Well, I've had my ups and downs but hopefully this will give me the motivation to continue!!
I'll be blogging on how it goes!

In our homeschool this week…

We are finishing up
Unit 26: Pirates, Pilgrimages, and Princes in Preparing Hearts for His Glory.  Last week we read about the Middle Ages and it has been fun to learn about that time period.  One of the things we are going to be reviewing this month is A Journey Through Learning Lapbooks' Knights and Castles Lapbook with Study Guide.  This is going right along with what we have been reading about!  You can see what Funny Bunny has been working on below.  She still has a lot more before she finishes.

Books Funny Bunny is reading independently...

Places we're going and people we're seeing...

Today Funny Bunny had her American Girl Book Club.  They finished off the Caroline series and discussed books 5 and 6.  For the craft they made cute little baskets and for snack they shook up some cream to make butter and ate it on their mini muffins.  They all had a great time!

Last weekend we took a quick getaway to Disney!!  And for once it was EMPTY!  We didn't wait more than 10 minutes for a ride.  It was amazing and the weather was overcast so it wasn't too hot either.

We arrived!

The first time we have been there before the park is even open.

It was so empty we got to ride on the Speedway...normally the lines are too long!

Some friends rode along with us.  They were spinning the tea cups.
