It's Time To Grow Up!

I was cleaning out a desk drawer last night and found this printed out on a piece of paper.  I have no idea where it came from so if anyone recognizes it, please let me know.  I'm sure it spoke to me when I printed it and it still speaks now...as a reminder of my behavior toward my family.  I hope it can be a help to someone else!

The apostle Paul knew that kids will be kids, and as children we behave childishly.  But he also pointed out that, as we grow up, we must set aside childish behavior and become more mature.

Children are by nature petty, hurtful, and faultfinding in their relationships.  They speak rashly, rudely, and selfishly, with little concern for how their words affect their parents and others.

Children think life revolves around them.  They're self righteous.  They think they're always right and that others are at fault, even when the evidence declares them guilty.  I'll never forget the time one of our daughters came to the table with chocolate on her face - clear evidence that she'd been into the cookie jar.  Evidence or not, she insisted she was not guilty.  Parents often face such tests in teaching their kids to tell the truth - to grow up in their abilities to be straightforward and honest.

We tell our kids, "It's time to grow up!"

And of course some of the unhappiest husband-wife relationships are those in which one or both haven't really grown up.  They are still petty, hurtful, and faultfinding.  They still speak rashly and rudely, with little regard for how their words may hurt each other.  They still think life revolves around them, and have trouble taking responsibility for their actions and choices, and admitting it when they are wrong.  They blame, ridicule, and find ways to get back at their spouses.

They speak, think, and reason like children.

It dawned on me one day, in the middle of an argument with my wife, that it was time I grew up.  That I stopped acting like the kids.  And you know what?  I realized if I was going to be a man, I couldn't act like a child.  And, so, just like Paul said, I put away childish things .

Prayer:

"Lord God, help me put away childish words, attitudes, and actions.  May your Holy Spirit empower me this day.  Amen."

Discuss:  Think of any tense times you've had with your mate recently.  Can you detect in your own attitude any of the above childishness?  What steps can you take to help your own children mature?

Purex Complete with Zout Giveaway

Attention all laundry-cleaning mommies...I have some exciting news!!  Purex has come out with a new and exciting liquid detergent called Purex Complete with Zout.

It is a detergent and pre-treater, all in one.  It combines the proven performance of Purex detergent with the triple-enzyme stain-fighting power of Zout stain remover.

Here is how it works.

Purex Complete with Zout contains three powerful stain-fighting enzymes.  Each targets a different type of stain:

Protease:  Works against protein based stains such as grass and blood.

Amylase:  Works against starchy stains such as chocolate and tomato sauce.

Mannanase:  Works against guar, which is used as a thickener in many foods, such as ice cream, barbecue sauce, and salad dressing.

It can be used as both a pre-treater and a detergent making it great for everyday laundry and heavily soiled loads.

My Thoughts:  First of all, I love Purex.  Back before I became a "smarter shopper", I bought a very well known, but expensive detergent.  Then one day I decided to try some less costly brands and I found Purex!  Purex is priced between $3.99 and $7.99 depending on the size and the retailer, so you are not wasting your money, and it cleans just as good, if not better, than its competitors.

Purex Complete with Zout comes in two fragrances, Fresh Morning Burst and Free & Clear.  We prefer no fragrance, so I received the Free & Clear.  It's fragrance free and has a hypoallergenic formula for sensitive skin.

It worked great on our clothes.  I used it on towels, darks, and lights.  All clothes came out clean and fresh!
Find Out More:  If you would like to try it out for yourself, sign up to receive a free sample.  After signing up you'll also be able to print a $1 off coupon.  You can also find out more at the Purex website and find the nearest retailer.

Lent ~ Day Twelve

{Psalm 51:2 - Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin.}

We are all sinners...and we must confess, ask for forgiveness, and we will be forgiven...

{Luke 18: 9-14 - To some who were confident of their own righteousness and looked down on everybody else, Jesus told this parable:

“Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector.

The Pharisee stood up and prayed about himself: ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other men—robbers, evildoers, adulterers—or even like this tax collector.

I fast twice a week and give a tenth of all I get.’

“But the tax collector stood at a distance. He would not even look up to heaven, but beat his breast and said, ‘God, have mercy on me, a sinner.’

“I tell you that this man, rather than the other, went home justified before God. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.”}

Life Skills?

Wikipedia defines Life Skills as a set of human skills acquired via teaching or direct experience that are used to handle problems and questions commonly encountered in daily human life.

So what is a skill?  A skill is the learned capacity to carry out pre-determined results often with the minimum outlay of time, energy, or both.

So thankfully I am teaching human skills...although sometimes I wonder.  ;o)  When I think of the term Life Skills though, I think of things like cooking, cleaning, sewing, etc.  Hopefully I will pass on a little information in each of those areas, but there is more to Life Skills than that.

Can a child learn skills like oral, listening, problem-solving, creative thinking, self-esteem, leadership, career development, teamwork, negotiation, and money management at home?  Am I preparing my child for all of that??  My answer is YES and you are too, whether you know it or not.

Oral - Working on speaking clearly, thinking before formulating a sentence, and practicing oral narration.

Listening - Don't speak when someone else is talking and listening to instructions (we have to work on this one).

Problem-Solving - Taking the time to think through a problem to come to a solution.

Creative Thinking - Lots of reading and imaginative play.

Self-Esteem - Plenty of praising from adults.

Leadership - Taking turns picking games and making up rules.

Career Development - Talking about the future and what it takes to work in certain fields.

Teamwork - Playing nicely with friends and avoiding conflict.

Negotiation - Evaluating options and working on getting the best one (she seems to be proficient in this already, at least in negotiating with us).

Money Management - Deciding how to split allowance between saving, spending, and donating.

As our daughter gets older, as with most children, she will encounter many different situations and hopefully we are preparing her for some of them!

Spring and Spring Break!

Yesterday was the first day of spring and Friday was the start of Spring Break in our area.  Although we took a field trip on Friday, we are not planning to take this week off with the rest of our county.  We take so many other breaks throughout the year it just doesn't make sense to take off the week everyone else is.

We are excited however, that all activities for the week are off.  No soccer, dance, piano, and Bible class.  No rushing around and we'll be enjoying out quiet, relaxed evenings!!  I am looking forward to that!!

Do you take off of school when it is Spring Break in your area?

Menu Plan Monday - March 21

Oh my goodness, all of last week's meals were YUMMY!  If you missed them, go HERE.  The only thing that was not great were the brownies, but I suspected that since they are supposed to be healthy.  I've never eaten a "healthy" brownie that tasted good.  If you know a recipe for one, please share!

So here's the menu for this week:

Monday: Potted Chicken Pie (it was so good and easy to make we are having it again)
Tuesday: Spaghetti and Corn Bread (daughter's favorite)
Either Wednesday or Thursday: Chili
Friday: Grilled Chicken Tacos

Weekly Wrap-Up #18

Monday through Wednesday of this past week we did school as usual, but Thursday through Saturday we were out of the house practically all day long (that's why I've been short on posts).

Friday we went on a field trip with our homeschool group to a teaching zoo and then a Planetarium show.  Both were excellent and a lot of fun!

Thanks for Joining Our Homeschool Reviews and for more Weekly Wrap-Up, this week I am linked up with Kris over at Weird, Unsocialized Homeschoolers
